"All the fences must come down."
That's what Uncle Sam at Washing-
ton told John H. Hall, United States
istrict attorney for Oregon. Uncle
Sam said a lot of other things, too, some
of which Mr. Hall rememebered when
he arrived home recently, others of
which he didn't think of for the moment.
"All fences enclosing areas of the
public domain," said Mr. Hall, inhaling
deeply of the warm midwinter breeze,
the like of which had not entered his
lungs since his departure for the
national capital, 16 days before, "must
be removed. The ultimatum from
Washington is final. I am instructed
to enforce to the letter the laws against
fires and trespass on the public domain.
I shall have all the assistance I need.
and when spring comes, inspectors will
get busier than ever."
"Every single solitary fence?" was
asked.
Yes, sir. I explained to the au
thorities at Washington that it the law
were enforced it should be enforced im

The demand tor beef cattle baa been
increasing steadily with the adyance
of winter. The prospects for pulling
cattle through the winter with the hay
now on hands is growing brighter and
brighter every day to stockmen, and
they are in no hurry to sell for this
reason. When the winter began it was
feared that feed would be short and
there was a rush to sell, especially from
the Interior. Several thousand bead
were bought from Interior stockmen by
the Seattle buyers at prices ranging
from fi.aj to $3.50 tor steers, cows at
do time reached $J. Just what could
have touched the market that this
Portland firm should pay $3.50 tor cows
is unknown.
