BAWLINB POHT NO. 1. O. A. R. MEET AT
Odd Fellows' Hall at Heppner, every third
Saturday of rich month.
G. W. Kuia. Adj. O. W . Smith, Cora.
THURSDAY. JAN. 14, 1904.
The meeting of the National
Livestock and Woolgrowers a
eociation in Portland this week
is one of the most im ortant ever
hela by these orginazations. Many
men of national fame are present
and many able paper, touching
upon every phase of tho stock in
duntry, will be read and discussed.
Th-; three principal subjects which
the convention is dealing with this
week are a better market, the at
titude cf the government on the
land problem and the securing of
fair freight rates from the railroads.
The proposed indejx ndi nt packing
company it is expected will take
form before the close of this meet
ing and that machinery will be
started in motion that will result
in the establishment of a packing
plant that the trusts cannot break.
Much good to th livestock in
dustry is e i peeled to result from
this meeting.
capital invested in the Lewis and

will be built to the Willow creek

the time the exposition opens the
mines will be in full operation.
Our county is but little known on
the outside for lack of being
properly advertised, hence the
slow development of her natural
resources. However, it may be
said to the credit of the county,
that while development has been
slow it has been of a substantial
character. Under present con
ditions there can never be a more
propitious time to do a little out
side advertising. There will never
be a time that we can expect better
results from a email amount of
money judiciously expended in
letting the outside world know
something of the opportunities
here for the .profitable investment
of capital and labor in the de
velopment of our varied resources.
The convention souvenir edition
of the Rural Spirit is a splendid
number.
