William Rea, an expert coal miner of
Rock Springs, Wyoming, was here the
latter part of last week to examine and
report upon tbe Heppner coal mine for
tbe Union Pacific Railway Company.

been arrested on complaint of Everett
parties on a charge of obtaining money
upon false pretenses, wat held in the
sum of $ 1000 ball for hia appearance in
court, lie will doubtless be able to
secure the necessary bond.
The city ha don a piece of good
work by having the channel of Willow
creek wid ened and break-water put in
just above May street. It would be
crest safeguard if tbe channel were
widened in various plsces through town
in esse of future high wstcrs, bat the
expense would be greater than the city'

The extremely moist weather of the

who operated the Heppner mill last

S. P. Florence and V. Gentry drove
a herd of about GO head of their stock
cattle to Butter creek this week where
they have hay to winter them.
II. A. Murpbey, the Monnment mer
chant, returned Tuesday evening from a
three weeks' pleasure and business trip
to Ssn Francisco. He left by yesterdsy
morning's stsge for Monument.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard II. Ilerren came
down from tbe coal mines Tuesday to
siend the holidsys in Heppner. Wil
lard says the mines are about deserted
for the week, only one man remaining
to look aller them.
J. S. Buseick, who was in town yester
day from II in ton creek, report range
good and stock doing well in his lo
cality. II think there will be plenty
of hay to aell next spring at a very
reasonable price. Up to this time stock

W. O. Minor sold a small herd of his
shorthorns this week to Nunnamsker &

Wilcox of Spring Hollow. The lot con
sisted of two cows and calvea and four
beifer calves. One of the latter was
from Mr. Minor's show herd and a
couple of the others just as good. Messrs
Nunnamaker& Wilcox buy them for
breeding purposes.
Andy Rood, Jr., came np Monday
from Portland, where he has been at
tending business college, to spend the
holidays here.
