New Sets Use Screen Grid Tubes
Two new Radlolas employing the
now AC screen grid tubes and a Dew
power amplifier la a speclal!y4eslgnri
circuit to bring out their full capabili
ties, have been announced by K. A.
N'lcholas, vice president ot the Radio
Victor Corporation of America.
One of these sets. Radlola 44. Is a
table model, and the other, Radlola 4,
Is a console with a built-in electro
dynamic loudspeaker. Both receivers
are encased In cabinets of two toned
walnut veneer.
"Radlola 44," the announcement of
Mr. Nicholas eiplalns, "utilises three
I Y Z2I screen grid tubes, two of which
serve as radio frequency amplifiers,
and the third as a power detector.
The new t'X 245 power amplifier tube
Is used In the single stage of audio
amplification. Tbe receiver has three
tuned radio frequency circuits, h t be
cause ot tbe characteristics of the
screen grid tubes, has as mucr selec
tivity as a set having four tuned cir
cuits and using the standard throe-element
tubea. Tbe two UY 224 tubes
which are used as radio frequency am
plifiers give as much amplification as
four of tbe ordinary three-element
tubes
"The screen grid power dotoctor
tube gives such a strong signal that
It makes pnsslble the elimination of
one stage of audio frequency amplifi
cation, reducing to a minimum the
pjttll'.'.'.lf of dL.l'irtl' n, sometimes
present where successive stages of
audio amplification are used. The out
put energy from the plate of this
pjwer detector tube Is transferred by
a choke and filter system to the VX
215 power amplifier tube Initead of
through a transformer. Thla results
In an exceedingly high quality of
musical reproduction and brings out
particularly well the full tones of the
buss register. As an additional pre
caution to Insure undlstorted reproduc
tion, the UY 224 power detector tube
ha a radio frequency filter which pre
vents any rsdlo frequency disturbance
from being carried over Into the audio
amplifier.
"Tbe UX-ZtS power Radlotron used
as an audio amplifier Is capable of
delivering a power output equal to
that of the UX 210 Radlotron. hut
operates with a lower plate Imped
ance which results la a (really Itn-

An unusual type ot selector dial Is
employed In Rsdlola 44. In addition to
the Ui unl scsla marklnga of sero to

arranged concentrically so that they
appear to be one control, adding mate
rially to the external appearance and
enabling the user to operate both con

local dlntance switch maintains the
quality of reproduction for both strong
