This is shown by the fact that in
1000 this disease caused about
169,500 deaths, or 185 deaths to
every 100,000 people living in the
country at that time. In 1924,
when the U. S. population was
morethan 110,000.000. there were
85, 500 deaths from thin cause, or
a rate of 78 deathi to every 100,
000 people. Had the 1900 rate
continued through the entire pe
riod to 1924. tuberculosis of the
lungs would have caused one and
a half millions more deaehs than
it mJ cause during thin period.
In the year 1924 alone, this drop
in the death rate made a clear
saving of 117.700 lives.
