The Camp Followers
OfPublicHealth.
I'Vo.ti time immemorial armies
wre followed by men and wom
en who catered to the baser appe
tiios of the soldiers. These camp
followers added nothing to the
comfort and wetlbt intl of the ar-
mil's; snstead they were always
a prolific source of trouble and
disease. In the world war the
number and activities of these
papusites were greatly curtailed
lor the reason .hat educated pub
lie opiuion recornized their de
suueiive viciouHnew.
In its, fight ftRainst disease the
vast army of public health work
ers have also been followed by
en and women who. in their
parasitic activities, remmble the
camp followers of old. They are
much more vicious, however, for
they prey only upon the sick and
infirm. They exhist because pub
lic opinion tolerates them.
These irouum camp followers
know little of the snuton.y of the
human body, have not even a
no.ldinu acquaintance with the
nudicat sciences, and pet they
p-ofes a to cure all ailments, acute
or chronic, infections or non in
infectious. They snatch at the
crumhs discarded at the wayside
by scientific workers, add mys
tety, leaven with fear, and firmly i
olfer to the receptive public half
baked truths and pseudo scientif
ic facts. People .uffeiing with
headuch, with colds, with rheum
alism, with epilepsy, with tuber

promised relief and cure by using
