periments have been running about a
year and Hie experimenters have so
far examined nearly 800 egg luld by

fected with various forms of the dis

ined by Inoculation Into the bodies of
chickens and many others have been
cultured. None of the birds, or a few
animals so Inoculated, bus as yet de
veloped tuberculosis.

Investigations of the soft-pork prob
lem by the United Htates lx-partmeut
of Agriculture and co-operating state
experiment station have shown thut
It la possible to utilize mature eoy
bean pasture in auch a way that sub
sequent feeding of corn and tankage
will produce satisfactory firmness of
carcass. Soy beans fed with corn In
dry lot In the proportion of 1 pound
of soy beans to 8 pounds of shelled
corn to 130 pound hogs, however, do
not make a Ann carcass.
It 1 necessary to supplement the
soy-boan pasture with shelled corn
and minerals. According to the tests,
pig maintained on the supplemented
pasture for 8 to 10 weeks, and gain
ing 40 to 75 pounds, will produce a
firm carcaaa If later fed on corn and
tankage for an additional gain of V25
pounds.
The statement of the conclusions
adopted by the co-operating agencies
at the soft-pork conference held in
Chattanooga, Teun., In April la as fol
low: (1) Soy beana grazed with a supple
mentary ration of 1.0 to 2.5 per cent
of shelled corn and with minerals elf-
fed to pig starting at weights rang
ing from 23 to 83 pounds and making
gains of approximately 40 to 75
pounda through period of from 8 to
10 weeks produce, In the usual case,
carcasses of a satisfactory degree of
firmness when subsequent gain in
weight of 125 pounds or more ha
been made by the pig on corn With
tankage. '
(2) Soy bean fed a a supplement
to corn In dry lot In the ratio of 1
pound of soy beans to 3 pound of
ihelled corn to pig ranging up to 130
pound In iturtlBg weight will not
produce firm carcaase In the usual
case when the bog are slaughtered
after a gain of approximately 100
pound or mora has been made oo
the corn-soy-bean ration.

products, alfulfa, velvet beans, and
cull navy bean on firmness under
various condition. Likewise, it Is
planned to continue the Investigation
of factors other than feed, including
Initial weight, type, breed, sex, and
thrtftlneas.
