A BILL NYE STORY
James Whitcomb Riley and
Bill Nye used to go about the
country together lectureing.
Once when they were traveling
by train, Bill Nve, who was very
fond of playing jokes on his friend

it without Riley's knowledge.
When the conductor entered
the car for fare, Bill Nye re
marked innocently:" Here come
the conductor. Get your ticket
ready."
Mr. Riley searched first in one
pocket, then another, bnt with no
success. At length he turned to
his friend and explained that he
had lost his ticket, and asked him
for a loan as he had spent all his
money in buying the ticket. But
Bill Nye professed to be bank.

I tell you what, Riley, he said,
"just crawl down under the seat
and I'll put my coat over you and
he'll never know you are there."
Riley was a small man and the
situation was deperste, the con

ly, he followed Nye's suggestion.
When the conductor reached
their seat Bill Nye held out both
iheir tickets.
'.Two fares?" asked the con-

"Yes," solemnly answered the
wicked Bill Nve.'
"Two" said the train oficial.

With a mischievous twinkle in
his eye, Bill Nye bent over, lifted
the coat from his fried and said;
Its for my friend here, but he's
a little queer. He prefers to ride
under the seat"
