HUT
FIGHT LICE AND
MITES IN SUMMER
Kerosene has been used probably
more than any other one thing on the
average farm for. fighting the lice and
mites found In the poultry bouse. It
I audden death and very satisfactory
except fur one thing: evaporation 1
rather rapid and a new spraying or
other method of treatment I re
quired in a abort time. U being al
ways on hand Is a real advantage.
Mixed half and ball with waste ma
chine oil or crank-case oil, kerosene
I much superior to us alone and will
remain effective much longer. Some
people report extremely satisfactory
results by mixing kerosene and com
mercial fly apray for poultry use. This
will often last two or three months.
Crude oil such a I burned In the fur
naces of many people and also used
for hog dip, la very effective In com
bating lice and mite.
Probsbly tb most effective of all
tb sprsy preparations that can be
used la a coal-tar wood preservative
that can be purchased at most lumber
yards and drug stores. A poultry
house sprayed wUh this should not be
further trodbled with mites or lice
for another year. It Is highly deslr
abl In using this spray to be very
careful to get every part covered. Also
care should be used to put It on rath
er thinly, especially around the neat
and perches. It will stick to tb feet
of tbe ben and wfcen carried to the
neeti get on the egg and Injur their
quality both for market snd for bitch
ing. Tb season of rapid multiplica
tion of He and mite come with tb
wanner weather of spring and effec
tive eradication Is more eaatly accom
plished then than later, as well as
saving the drain upon the flock.
Build Complete Machine
for Production of Eggs
Don't omit feeding because the
fowl ar on th rang or running
through the feed lota.
No matter bow fine th breeding,
how careful tb brooding, bow long
the pedigree, unices tbe chicks and
young stock ar kept growing uni
formly and continuously through tb
growing season, they cannot develop
to the fullest extent of which they
ar capable. Only well-grown ben
lay their beet; only well-grown male
mike th beat breeder. It Is not so
much a question of getting maturity
fer the fall and early winter ahows as
securing a complete machine for th
gg factory.
Both young and old should bav ac
cess to tbe feed hopper all the time:
the old stock for feather-making me
terlat, th young for frame, meat and
feathers.
Various Mixtures Used
for Feeding the Ducks
Where ooty a tew duck ar raised
It la satisfactory to us tb same feed
for tbe duck as la used for the chick'
ena On commercial duck farms vert
ou mixture ar use! A common on
for use during tb flrat three weeka
la mad of equal parts of corn meal,
bran, low-grade flour, with 8 per cent
meat scrap and a little oyster shell
and grit. This Is fed Ave times a day
In amounts so that tbe ducklings will
clean It up rapidly. After tbe duck
ar three week old a mixture of two
parts corn meal, on part bran, on
part middlings and 10 per cent meat
scrapa, with some oyster shell and
finely cut green stuff makes up a sat
tafactory ration.
