MONTEREY
By Chas. Fenno Hoffman
Wa were not many -we who
stood
Before the iron sleet that day
Yet many a galant spirit would
Give half hia years if then he could
Have been with us at Monerej .
Now here, now there, the shot it
hailed
In deadly drifts of fiery spray.
Yet not a sinle solditr quailed
When wounded comrades round
them wailed
Their dying shout at Monterey.
And on still on our column kept
Through walls of flame its
withering way
Where fell the dead, the living;
stept
Still charging on the guns which
swept
The slippery sreets of Monterey.
Theloe himaelf recoiled aghast,
When, striking where he
strongest lay.
We swooped his flaming batteries
pas',
And braving full their mnrder
ous blast,
Stormed home the towers of
Monterey.
Our banners on those turrets wave,
And there our evening buglee
play;
Where orange boughs above
their grave
. Keep green the memory of the
brave
' Who fought and fell at Monte
rey.
We are not many - we who
pressed
Beside the brave who fell that
day;
But who of U9 has not confessed
He'd rather share their warrio
rest,
Thar, not have been at Monte
rey.

BIBLE READING FOR
THE WEEK
A NEW TRANSLATIONOF
AN INSPIRING CHAPTER
The 13th of First
Corinthians.
I will show you a fsr better
way. If I can speak the ittnguages
of men and even of nngels, but
have no love, I am only a noisy
gong or a flashing cymbal. If I
sm inspired to preach and know
all the secret truths and possiss
all knowledge, and if 1 have
such perfect faith that I can move
mountains, but have no love. 1
am nothing. Even if I give away
every thing I own, and give my
self up, but do it in pride, r.ot
love, it does me no good. Love is
patient and kind. Love is not
envious or boastful. It does not
put on airs. It is not ruiK It does
not insist on ia,r..;hu. it does
not otuiue angry. It is not re
sentfnl. I', is r.- thppy ver in
just)':, it is only happy with the
truth. It will bear anything, be
lieve anything, hope for anything,
endure anything, Love will never
die out. If thereiiinspired preach
ing, it will pass away. If there is
ecstatic speaking it will cerse.
If there is knowleddge, it will
pass away. For our knowledge is
imperfect and our preaching is
imperfect. But when perfection
comes, what is impertect will
pass away. When I was a chili, I
talked like a child, I thonght like
a child, I reasoned like a child.
When) became a man, I put aside
my childiyh ways. For now we
are Icckinz at a dim reflection in
a minor, but then we shall see
fact to face. Now mv knowledge
is imperfect, but then I shall
know as fully as God knows me.
So faith, hope, and love endute.
These are three, and the greatest
of them is love.
