There h a tide in the ailiii.s of men
' When taken at the flood, leads on to
fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage oftheit lite
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
OPPORTUNITY
They do wrong who say I come
no more
When orce I knock and fail to
find you in
For every day I stand outside
your door
And bid you wake, and rise to
fight and win.
Wail not for precious chances
passed away,
Weep not for golden ayes on
the wane!
Each night I burn the records of
the day:
At sunrise every soul is born
again
Laugh like a boy at splendors that
have sped
To vanished joys be blind and
deaf and dumb;
My judgments seal the dead
past with its dead
But never bind a moment yet
to come.
Tho deep in mire wring not
your hands and we?p
I lend my arm to ail who say
"I can!"
No shame faced outcast ever
sank so deep
But yet might rise aud be a
gain a man!
Dost thou behold thy lost youth
all aghast?
Dost reel from righteous ret-
rbution'a blow?
Then turn from blotted archives
of the past
And find the future'? pages
white as snow,
Art thou a mourner? Rouse thee
from thy spell;
Art thon a sinner? Sin may
be forgiven;
Each morning gives thee wings
to flee from hell,
Eacbnightastar to guide thy
feet to heaven.
Walter Malone
UNDISPUTED
A the annual Jackson day din
ner at Albanv, our worthy Gov
ernor, Walter M. Pierce, made
an address in which he gave an
accounting of hia administration
to date.
The Oregon Voter publishes
the address in full and brother
Chapman on the first cover Daue
advises the Oregon Voter reader
that it is Unedicted, Un revised
and Undisputed.
In the introduction to the add
ress however brother Chapman,
uses this language as an exam
pie of loose thinking in attract
ive and plausible form this add
ress is entilkd to rank well up
with forgotten orations by sue
essiful politicians of all ages.
uovernor nerce knows more
about how to ta'k and write to
get voihs than any man we hav
had in Oregon for many years.
No one will say much for him
as an administrator, but he
knows what to say and how to
say it. We present his Jackson
day oration. It contains truth,
half truth and mistatements.
We wonder what the genial
editor of the Oregon Voter will
say when he comes actually to
dispute the governors statement
as he intimiates that he may do
ao at a latter date.
IfERO WORSHIP
One of the most disgusting
spectacles of these days is the
display of admiration and maud
lin sympathy for criminals.
When the vicious seound.els
who made their escape from the
State penitentiary not long since
were apprehended and returned
tJ their Qells they were elevated
on pedestals and worshiped as
heroes.
We understand that as they
passed through Hood River on
their return the automobile in
which they were being transport
ed was thronged by admireis
and well wishers who were proud
to grasp them by the hand and
happy in the opportunity to ex
press their sympathy.
STAN FIELD ANNOUCES THE
CANDIDACY OF Mc NARY
According to an announcement
made by Senator Robert N. Stan
fit! of Oregon, there is a concer
ted movement on foot in Senatar
ial circles in Washington for the
purpose of including then ame of
Senator Charles L. McNary.also
of Oregon, as a Kepuolican can
didate for Viee President in 1928.
His name was brought to the at
tention of prominent members of
the Upper House by Senator Sta-
field after there had been much
comment concerning the boom
for Nicholas Longworth, present
Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatves, lor presidential honors.
Senator Stanfield. ih making
his formal annauncement, said.
"Eor some time rumors have per
sistently been circulated in Wash
ington to the effect that a quiet
movement was on foot for the
purpose of nominating Speaker
Nicholas Longworth of the House
for the presidency in 11(28,1 am
reminded that, in 1924, the Re.
publican nomination was tender
ed to four individuals before it
was finally accepted by Charles
G. Dawes. I have been intimate.
ly associated with my colleague,
Senator McNary, for many years
and have sen much of his ability
I therefore feel costrained to sub
mit his name to a group of Rs
publican leaders as a possible

The mistake which blights the
lives of so many is not that they
