Now France through faith
subdues her fears,
And German foemen speak
their cheer,
While earth uplifts a morn

And weary nations wake
to trace,
In terms of help, and not
of hate,
The compact of a comrade

And bid the better night

Not many days ago in Port
land, an officer of the law in the
course of his duty shot crimin
al and fatally wounded him.
A good many people at once be
came vocal in pity for the dead
desperado and condemnation ol
the officers.
Some of them rushed into
print and one, a clerk of a dist
rict court, recently occupied
nearly a column in The Oregon
ian in heaping ridicule and abuse
upon the officer and atteniptny
to excite sympathy for the crim
inal.
We feel that the officer pursu
ed the only course that was 0(.en
to him. It was no more incumbent
upon him to go in and drag the
prisoner out of his hiding place
than it would have been to have
attempted the capture of a mad
dog by taking him by the ears.
Umatilla county Oregon once
had a sheriff who treated his
prisoners with courtesy and kind
ness. His conduct toward his pri
aoners was predicated on the
principle set out in the poetic line.
Be noble and the nobleness
that lies
In other men sleeping but
never dead,
Will rise in majesty to greet
thine own.
This sheriff is no longer in the
land of the living.
A monument recites that three
criminals whom he trusted con
spired to shoot him tj death and
accomplished the design,
The clerical gent who, from
the cloistered seclusion of his
court room, sneers at Phearless
Philips, and sheds maudlin tears
over tne unhappy fate of Trask,
the thug, wilt do well if, before
he indulges In further censure
and ridicule he puts on the badge
of a ptace officer and brings a
few hard boiled moodshiners and
yeggmen to the bar of justice.

THE WEEK
The King's Welcome
Then shall the King say unto
them on his right hand, come, ve
blessed of my Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from
the foundation of the world: for
I was an hungered and ye gave
me meat: I was thirsty and ye
gave me drink: I was a stranger,
land ye took me in; naked, and
ye clothed me: 1 was sick, and ye
visited me; 1 was in prison, ard
ye came un;ome. Then shall the
righteous answer him, saying,
Lord, when saw we thee an nun
gred, and fed thee? or athirst,
and gave thee drink? And when
saw we thee a stranger, and took
thee in ? t r naked and clothed
thee? And when saw we thee
sick, or in prison, and came unto
tne? And the king shall answer
and say U'tto them, Verily I say
unto vou, Inasmuch as ye did it
unto one of the least of these my
brethren, even these least' ye did
it unto me'
