Not many days ago in Port
land, an officer of the law in the
course of his duty shot crimin
al and fatally wounded him.
A good many people at once be
came vocal in pity for the dead
desperado and condemnation ol
the officers.
Some of them rushed into
print and one, a clerk of a dist
rict court, recently occupied
nearly a column in The Oregon
ian in heaping ridicule and abuse
upon the officer and atteniptny
to excite sympathy for the crim
inal.
We feel that the officer pursu
ed the only course that was 0(.en
to him. It was no more incumbent
upon him to go in and drag the
prisoner out of his hiding place
than it would have been to have
attempted the capture of a mad
dog by taking him by the ears.
Umatilla county Oregon once
had a sheriff who treated his
prisoners with courtesy and kind
ness. His conduct toward his pri
aoners was predicated on the
principle set out in the poetic line.
