A VERY OLD PROCESS

The league idea is not new, it is
almost as old as civilization itself
The ancient tribe was nothing
but a laague of individuals and
their families. The orgina) Btate
was but a collection of tribes
comparable to the present league
of nations. The idea for a thou
sands of years has been to make
the larger unit protect the smal
ler unit. It is workable scheme
and hat been used since time im
memorial. It was prompted by
the necessity for aelf defense.
There is nothing new about it.
Nor is there any unnatural id
eallsm about the league pf nation
It merely calls for the application
of a very old formula to present
day conditions. We are not trout)
led about wars between tribes or
families these days. Tne diffi
culty arises between nations aid
we must stop these wars if we
are to be safe. The last big war
cost ten millions of lives or more.
When Sheldon Ulrich and other
Pendleton boys were killed we
were all sorry. Those boys were
entitled to life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness. It wes
cruel to cut them down; they had
not done nothing to deserve such
fates. In the next big war no
one will be safe. God knows what
may happen, if we do not apply
effective measures for the pre
vention of war.
In fighting the league and the
world court the reconcilables
fight against the process where
by the civilization we have he
came possible. Without that pro
cess man would still be a barbar
ian as he is yet in some savage
portions of the earth.
