MILLION LIVES SAVED
IN NEAR EAST
Believe Task Will be Com
pleted In the Next Few
Years.
That America will complete Iti work
In the Near East Id the nut three or
four years is the confident assertion
of J. J. Handsaker, Northwest Region
al Director of Near East Relief.
"For ten years we have been busy
binding up the wounds left by the
World War and the wart which fol
lowed the World War. A million lives
have been saved and 200,000 children
rescued and many of them given train
ing for Uvea of future usefulness. To
day there are tome 35,000 children In
America's care In the Near East. Their
nverage age It about ten years, 2004
are under the age of four years. The
Near East Relief keeps them only ta
rt they are sixteen. 8o carefully are
thy trained tn various handicrafts
that they 'are able to support them
helves at that age, and although we
try to follow them after they have left
the orphanages to care for them If
they are HI or to find them new Jobs
!n cas" they are misfits, still our serv
Ire practically ends when they are
slilcen. '
"Nearly all the money that America
gives Near East Relief today It spent
fur children. Help given to adult
takes (he form of clothing and this Is
never furnished free if the refugee
tire able to work or can pay even
f iw cents for their garments. Money
U spent on the children and at toon
as they are in position to care for
themselves our work will cease.
"It cannot be repeated too often
that the children are out of Turkey
and are safe from the slaughter to
whirh their parents were exposed.
Thev are under friendly but Impover
liihed governments in Armenia, Syria,
Palestine and Greece, and the chil
dren's only hope, not only of life, but
of training necessary for success In
life. Is in America. Buffering te in

million people have come back to self
su; port .after being robbed and exiled

Th -re are no fewer than 10.000 exiles,

bu' Near East Relief funds are ex

"It It the hope of the Near East Re
lief that Golden Rule Sunday, iJecem
her 6lH, will so bring borne to the
conscience of America the needs of
these children that funds may be
available, not only for the wants In
the orphanages but that relief may be
liven to some, at least, of the others.
"Near East Relief offices are at 613

STORY OF CHRISTMAS
SEALJNTERESTING
Idea Originated In Denmark
Years Ago Accomplishes Won-

More full of dramatic Interest than
the chapters of a novel, la the history
of the little Christmas Seal now on

Conceived by a Daulih postal olurk.

tuberculosis hospital; becoming the
tola financial support of a great or
ganisation dedicated to a Health cam

the "white plngue," are leading events
In the life hist ory of the Christinas Heal.
Mr. Ktnar llolboell, postal clerk In
fur off Denmark, busy cancelling
si amps and I andling packages during
the t'hrlstinsi teaaon of 190S, bad on
his heart Ilia problem of raising
money to support little hospital for
poor children stricken with tubercu

conceived the Idea of selling a seal

busy cancelling. Mr. llolboell submit
ted hit plan to the king, received the
royal sanction and the new teal wat
printed, told, and fulfilled Ita mission.
The children of the poor received the
care they needed, ' the little hospital.
Several yeart later, one of the
Danish seals fell Into the bands of
Jacob Rita, the American writer and
publicist. He waa Immediately In
terested, wrote to' a friend across the
ocean, obtained the story behind the
seal and published It In the "Outlook"
In 1907.
This story In turn stirred to action
an American woman. Miss Kmlly Die

was struggling with the financial prob

near Wilmington. Delaware. Mlae
Missel managed the first American
Christmas Seal Sale In 107, raising
13,000 for the needy hospital, a turn
far beyond her eipeclattoni.
From the three thousund dollar Seal i
Sale In 19"7 to th fcur and a halt
million dollnr sale In 124, the story
of the Christmas tieal hat been one of
magnificent accomplishment against
the foe tuberculosis. Between 1901 and
1919 the American Red Cross, put Ita
shoulder to the wheel, and backed the
Seat Sale, hence the term "Red Cross
