CROSBY,
THE RAW
RECRUIT
By JAMES F. DWYER
(W lr Sliurt aiorr fun c.l
AN OCCAHIONAt bullet whistled
through the thick, hot air and
plunged Into tha sand beak
behind which Crosby crouched.
Ha shivered aa ha listened to tha ghost
ly buss of the Mauser pellets, and ba
pondered deeply upon tba peculiar an
tics of bla Imagination, which persist
ed In picturing those flying bullets aa
red atoina tlngelug tba attnosphera
througii which they ripped a track.
Thla distorted visual Image puuled
Croeby. Ua knew that a bullet waa
not red, yet, every time ba beard tba
plug of tha leaden uieesengere, bla
Imagination made an attempt to over
whelm the Unpresslons recorded by bis
eyes. It waa very peculiar manifes
tation, and, try aa ba would, ba could
not prevent bla fancy from building
up the Impreaalon again and again. 11a
took tba cartridges from bis bandolier,
eiamlned tha brass shells wltb their
hslf exposed bullets with bis own eyes,
and then became disgusted when Imagi
nation pictured a roae plnk trail di
rectly above bla head where a alug
bad gone whistling out over tba gray
veldt
All Ibrough tha long forenoon ba bad
crouched In the little crater on tba
summit of tba eand dune, peering out
acraea the burrylng waters of tba river
which the rays of a yellow aun atabbed
relentlesaty. Ua waa perfectly safe,
but bis teeth chattered as ba rolled
about In the aballow basin or looked
csutloualy over the edge ot tba bank
opposite, where a thin blue mist Ilka
a Perl's veil bung sbove the spot where
tba euemy lay concealed.
Why bad ha stopped there! Again
and again ha asked himself tha ques
tion. At daybresk bla company had
marched up from tba river bank, tba
great, gray veldt, cool and solemn.
stretching Invitingly before them. Then
came tha first scattered fualllgde from
tha oppoalte bank. Johnstone, Croa
by'a mate, pitched forward on bla face
and lay atllL Tba big Welsh corporal
muttered a curse aa ba swung round
toward tba river, flung bla arma Into
the air and drooped on bla kneea. It
waa terrible. The company bad their
backa turned to tha unseen foe, and
Croeby, a raw recruit only Ave days
oft the transport tliat brought him
from Plymouth to Table bay, remem
bered at that moment a trick played
upon him twenty years before when a
echoolmate dropped an Icicle Inside
bla shirt collar.
Then the sun-tanned officer, keenly
alive to tba danger, ordered tba men
to double, and they doubled eagerly.
It waa their first baptism of lira, and,
aa there waa not particle of cove:
available, their safely Isy In speed. It
wss at tbst moment that Crosby stum'
bled Into the little crater In the sand
duna where the noonday sun poured a
vertical lira upon blm sli hours after
wards. Ua had made an effort fb fol
low bla comrades, but, ss ba struggled
oat of the pit, three mora men fell un
der tha Are of tba Boer aharpahooters.
Crosby's Imagination Immediately point'
ed out tha danger to which he, a soil'
tary figure, would ba exposed If ba at
tracted to Join the rank, and that
Imagination, which Is the parent of
cow ardice, dragged him back Into tba
little bole over which the enemy'a bul
lets whistled. Five minutes afterwards
tha company waa half a mile away,
while on the river bank there were
ten dead men and one live one wbo
waa virtually prisoner In a pit four
feet deep.
Then Crosby committed blunder
that waa further proof of coward's
sonl. Finding, that ba was ssfa from
tha enemy's lira, ba threw hla rifle over
tha rldga of hla shelter and biased
wildly at tha bank oposlta. How ha
regretted that blunder as tha morning
rolled slowly by I If he had remained
quiet, tha bidden enemy would not
hare kuown that tha little pit con
cealed a foe, but tbs fusillade tbat
followed Informed him that ha would
ba a prisoner while the light lasted.
Occasionally ha tested the watchful
ness of the foe, and now ha shuddered
aa ba contemplated tha three bolea In
tha pith helmet which had been die
played wben bis bead was not Inside
it
Ua looked up at tba blue dome above
him, and pictured tha bare veldt be
neath till he compared his own posl
tlon with That ot ths stuffed kingfisher
beneath the big glass globe on bla
aunt'i table In Truro. Tha kingfisher
waa really better off. Ua had paaeed
tha last stage of suffering, while Croa
by still bad a horrible fear of the rifle
men on the other aide of the swiftly
flowing river. As tha day rolled alowly
by ba become nervous and peevish. Ua
naked himself why they stayed. What
right had they, twenty bloodthirsty
Boers, to sit down and wait patiently
till hla bead appeared above tha adga
of the pit? It wasn't wsr It waa mur
der. He, Algernon Crosby, head teller
of the County bank, whose patriotic
aoul had boon stirred by the worda of
'Tba Hoys of the Hulking Ilreed" and
"The Absent-minded Beggar," had
never Imagined cold-blooded warfare
of tba type ba was then tuklng a hand
In. A Mephlstophellan aelt assured him
that be was tha absent-minded beggar
when ha dropped back Into the bole
Instead of taking the chance to rejoin
his company, and the solf-made aneer
did not improve bis temper. Again ha
blazed wildly at tha opposite bank, and
attain the foe displayed excellent
marksmanship by dusting tba recruit
wltb asnd thrown up by burrowing bul
lets. The Imprisoned man felt that the
action ot twenty men In waiting pa
tiently to murder one was not above
criticism.
And then Crosby's Imagination would
persist In picturing those pellets that
came from the opposite bsnk In a hue
tbat Crosby knew wss ridiculous. lie
waa annoyed wltb bla Imagination, lie
was annoyed wltb tha aneerlng self
tbat pictured hlio vl tba living embodi
ment of Kipling's "Absent-minded Beg
gar." Ha was annoyed wltb tba sane,
respectable Crosby that reckoned up
the Interest on thirty-nine pouqds nine
teen shillings and ntua-penca three
farthlnga for three and three-quarters
yeara at two and flve-elghls per cent
quicker than any other clerk In the
County bank. It waa really tba laal
ness of that Croaby tbat bad evolved
tba warlike Croaby that came overaea
to capture Plet and Hans and Dirk,
who were giving Thomas Atkins a con
siderable amount of trouble to subdue.
Crosby wss actually revolting against

snd his nervousuesa increased. Ua waa
not coward, but ba waa highly Imagi
native, and the result Is the same. The
nicely pierced boles In the whlta hel
met took on tha appearance of eyea
tbat atudled bla pala face and shaking
hands. Ills bands bad been white snd
weil-msnlcured when ha left Truro, but
tba few daya under tha South African
sun bsd tinted them tba color of a
freshly boiled lobster. Crosby cursed
bis own stupidity, cursed tba fat re
cruiting sergesnt wbo said ha would
make a fine soldier, cursed tba trans
port that had brought blm across the
Atlantic, sod the sun-tannsd officer
wbo bad led blm Into the ambuacade.
The aun'a raya cams down In per
pendicular shower upon blm. He burled
bla tingling face In tba aand and prayed
for night Ua would creep away In
tba night run ewuy acroaa tha veldt
till ba overtook hla comrades. Ha would
tell them of but adventure and tbey
would laugh heartily at bla cunning.
It was while ha waa compoalng a
little account for tba amusement of
those comrades tbat hla ayea, alieltered
beneath the helmet, detected alight
movement on tba ridge of tbe aand pit
Ha Jerked his lege back hurriedly when
bla eyes Informed hla brain ot what
they aaw, and tha audden movement
brought down much aand and also a
haruiteaa green snska that had been
crawling along tha edge. Croaby yelled.
and the anska picked Itself up and at
tempted to beat a hasty retreat Cn
fortunately, tbe aand waa very dry, and
tha anaka found It a difficult Job to
climb out Time after time It rolled
to tha bottom of tba bole, and each
time It fell Croaby yelled. He bad
never met a anaka In such cloae quar

state to receive tba vtalt Tbe anaka
waa disgusted. Four times It made an
attempt to scale the bank, and four
tlmea It fell back. Then It noticed
Croaby'a leg, and wltb serpent wisdom.
Immediately recognised that the aacent
could ba mada much easier by tbat
route.
