THE LANDING OF THE
PILGRIM FATHERS
The breaking waves dashed !ii'h
On a 8tern and rock-bound coa t.
And the woods against a sonny
sky
Their giant branches tossed;
And the heavy niuht hung' d; rk
The hills and waters o'er.
When a band of exiles mooted
their bark
On the wild New England shoit.
Not as the conquerer come?,
They, the trueheartd came;
Not with the rell of the stirring
drums;
And the trumpet that sings of
lame;
Not as the flying come,
In silence snd in fear;-
They shook the depths of of the
desert gloom
With their hymns of lofty cheer,
Amidst the storm they sanp,
And the stars heard and the son
Ann tne sounding aisies or. me
dim woods rang
To the anthem of the free!
The ficean epgle soared
From his nest by the white wavYs
foam;
And the rocking pines of the
forest roared -This
was their welcome home
What sought they thus afar?
Kright jewels of the mine?
The wealth of seas, the spoils of
war?-
They sought a faith's pure
shrine!
Ayj call it holy ground,
The soil where first they trod.
They have left unstained whit
there they found
Freedom to worship God.

The Christmas Spirit
From the very beginirg of tin
Christian era, and even be for
its historic beginiiigs in the dim
sha lowings of prophecy the s;d: it
oi nnsimas nas neen project eu
above the horizon of human hoj
rizing ever higher toward tl
zenith.
The spirit is a trinity "whose
component elements are puritj,
peace, and love. We have it epit
omized in the song the angils
sang above the plains of Bethle
hem;, Peace on earth good will
to men; in the language of Christ
The pure in heart shall see Go J,
and in the words of the Beloved
Apostle; Little children love ore
another.
The embodi ment of that spirit
and its enthronement in thi8
world has been the dream oi
saints and the task of saves.
And now at last the "far off
divine event" draws near and
the still small voice to rise a!ove
the roar of traffic and the roll
drums.
