Anson led the way to a lotur gallery
opening off a balcony on the Drat land

men psuaed to view the superb spec

the depths of the Dark Continent skins
of rare beasts, from the Never Never

"It would be hard to make a choice."
Anson moved to a small table wlilcb

globe was a little stuffed bird on a

"I mean sn actual broken heart,"
retorted Anson. "There are caaes on

No; welt, he wss a wonderfully keen

Porter felt eur the fiih bad escaped,
but presently It rose to the surface,

Ilurns smiled Indulgently.
"Well," ha said, "granted that an
actual broken heart Is possible tn a
fish, It would hardly add to a little
bird's vslue In a collection of this
kind, snd besides what baa It got to do

"Everything,' replied Anson. "I'll
tell you. A casus) acquaintance
would probably not regard Itldgeley
ss a man of much sentlineut Hut be

girl ah was upon whom be fastened
his affection. I don't know exactly
what Interposed to halt the marriage,
but for some reston It was at any

"Then Itldgeley went off on his wan
derings to out-of-the-way places, col
lecting all these things, and for a
year disappeared entirely In Central
Asia. A vague report cam to hand
that ha had been murdered by caravan
robbers, though according to Illdgeley's
account his plight wss no more dee
perst thsn being out of touch with
telegraph wires.
"Finally ha made for Persia, and
turned up In Shlras at a time when
a rather curious contest was In prog
ress. ' It sppesred that ths Indolent
Inhabitant of that decadent city of
poetic fame had scrambled from the
dust and were beating ench other over
the head In angry recrimination re
garding the rival merits or three sing
ing nightingales. Ths three nightin
gales were respectively the proierty
of three cafes, each car endeavoring
to win exclustv patronage by ths
vole of Its feathered songster, In
Persia tht nightingale taking tht
place of Irfgh-prlccd prima donnas
with us.
"At the caravanserai where Itldgeley
lodged, be fell Into the company of sn
Englishman and sn Australian. Very
shortly the spirit of the contest took
bold of them, snd sfter visits to the
three cafes, they became strong par
tisans.. Itldgeley stoutly maintained
that th bird he numed Madam Ne
braika, after hi state, could give th
other two long odds ss a prims donna.
With equal Insistence the Englishman
and th Auetrallun stood by their fa
vorites, calling them Madame London!
and Madame Dydns respectively.
"Heretofore the three birds had not
tested their vocal powers In each oth
er's presence, and by,thls plan Itldge
ley proposed to settle the question of
superiority for sll time. Hence It wss
to tb Cafe of the itose that th bird
were brought In covered cages, etcli
cage -being suspended from the roof
sbove a pool of clear water occupying
the center of the paved floor.
"As public Interest In tb nightin
gale contest had ruu to the touch of
dagger hilt when two men passed In
the street the stone bench around th
walls wss parked with cut-throat-look-ing
figures, while th narrow bazar
outside and the little garden of bloom
ing ros bushes from which th cafe
took Its sign were thronged with those
unable to gain admittance. Kalysn
mouthpiece went from hsnd to uuud
with wagers offered snd taken, and
tiny cups of black coffee were drained
to the success of th backer favorite.
"I'.y arrangement with th propri
etor lot were drawn for the order of
the contest, the selection fulling first
tu I-ondont, then to Bydna, with the
final effort reserved for Madam .Ne
braska. "A silence of absorbed expectancy
full upon the throng when th cover
was removed from Londonl's cage.
That little bird ruffled her plumsge.
Implied around once or twice, took a
firm grip on her perch, and putting oat
her Hi rout, gave eipretslon to a few
melodious notes. As it were, hsvlng
gained her pitch, she set off with a
eerles of trills which rose Ilk a foun
tain tossing sprays of liquid gems Into
the air. Higher and higher she sent
her voice, until somewhere In th
senltb of the ethereal blue she touched
her top note, fell snd ros to It again,
and then burst Into a rbspsody of
song. When she ceased tapping her
beak on the perch as If to challenge a
better performance, grunts and ejaca
latlona of approval brought down tb
bouse after the Persian fashion.
"8ydna followed much th sum
method a tb first bird th night
ingale singing schools In Persia being
very similar In their course of tone
production, etc. but as sb reached
higher note thsn her rival, tht Aus
tralian grinned triumphantly upon the
Englishman.
"Then Nebraska wss uncovered.
But Instead , of the little bird being
found fluttering with restrained eager
ness on ber perch, the audienc be
held her sitting motionless on the
wicker (belt tn th bottom of th
cage. A murmur of adverse) com
ment which ran around the stone
bench prompted one of th attendants
to recall tb public songster to a
sens of ber duty with th tip of a
wooden coffee stirrer. 8h gaxed
around with ber bead like eyes al

encouraging word of ber trainer, and
bopped bravely onto her perch. A
moment of euapente followed. Ne

head, opened her beak wide, and
and from It ram forth a crescendo
plaintive squawk."
"A whatr ejaculated Burnt with
astonishment
"Just a squawk," repeated Anson.
"Then sit toppled off her perch, back
ward, dead Into th bottom of th
cage.'
"Dead Into th bottom of the cage I

Burns.
"Sh died of a broken heart She
simply couldn't rite to the occasion
and beat those other birds. 8h knew

citement subsided, Itldgeley bought
th deed bird and sent It to a local
taxidermist to be stuffed. II showed
Itldgeley th actual broken heart."
"Ureal 8cottl" exclaimed Hum.
"But but after all what has It got to
do with BIdgeley's lov affair?"
"Just this," explained Anson In a
lower tone, "It wss a curious coin
cidence, but lildguley subsequently
discovered that little bird died about
th asm Urn as bis sweetheart in tht
L'nlted 8tates. It wa said sh also
cam to her end from a broken heart,
owing to Illdgeley's long sbsenct and
