Goldsmith COLUMBUS Behind him lay the gray Azores, Behind the Gates of Hercules; Before him not the ghost o I Bhores; Before him only shoreless seas The good mate said: "Now must we pray, For lo! the very stars are gone, Brave AdmV 1, speak; what ' shall 1 say?" "Why say: 'sail on! sail on! and ..Mil on: My men grow mutinous day by day; My men gtow ghastly.wan and weak". The stout mate thought of home; a spray Of salt wave washed his swarthy cheek "What shall I say, brave Ad- m'r'l,8ay. If we sight naught but seas at dawn?". t Why you shall say at break of day; 'Sail on! sail on! sail on! and on! ' They sailed and sailed, as winds might blow, Until at last tht-blanched mate said; "Why, now not even God would know should I and all men fall dead. These very winds forget their way, For God from these dread seas . is gone. Now speak, brave Adm'r'l, speak and say-" He said: "Sail on! sail on! and on! They sailed. They sailed. Then speak the mate: "Tnis mad sea shows its teeth tonight. He curls bis lips, he lies In wait, He lifts his teeth as if to bite! Brave Adm'r'l, say but one good word: What shall we do when hope is gone?" i The words leapt like a leaping sword: Sail on! sail on! and on!" Then pale and worn he pacd his deck And peered through dancness Ah, that night Of all dark nights! And then a speck A light! A light! At last a light! It grew, a starlit flag unfurled! It grew to be time's burst of dawn, He gained a world; be gave that world Its grandest lesson ;On! sail on! BID1E STUDY Generally throughout the (con try there is a growing feeling that moral instruction of the youth of the land is an absolute aecessity. This is evidenced by the efforts of some of the denom nations of the Christian faith to provide church schools for the cnildren in which not only secu lar but religious instruction shall be given ; by the provision of la cilitits in addition to the Sunday School by Borne others and by in clusion of non-sectarian course of moral instruction in th eurte vula of the public Bchools. This may be taken as a hopt ful omen for the future for two reasons: first, it indicates the growth of a sense of the import, ance of fh .intangible spirit ua values on the part of rhe gencr- a' publicand, second, Ktichefforls i i the present cannot have othei I 'inn the raising of the conduct thndards of the future. We must not however expect loo much. Instruction is but n p irt of training and knowing it n t Blways doing, nor can we to s ire that certain knowledge and long continued right doing will a'ways eventuate in right being "NOT BY A IUCFULL" JHE movement of products, the' acceleration or transit, lie cut in distances, the smaller cost of getting things to market-these these are the big thing in new Oregon. You can leave Eimene. 1 20 odd away, in the afternoor, Utend the theatre in Portland, nd go home after the perfor nance. Eugene people do it. You can live in Albany, do yoi r (hopping 100 miles away, and ei t Jinner in your own home. Life is new, and it isdifferent. Oregon has freed its people from the slavery of inhospitable high ways, has spent big money on road and Is emancipated. -Oregon Journal Not entirely, brother, not en tirely. We have an ideal highway jervice into Portland and no one objects but the state's problem is not solved. There are region a roads and connecting roads of the greatest importance that have not yet been built. The matmer in whice they have been neglect ed is shameful. The apparent purpose of the highway bureau has been to get trafie into Portland. That poli cy should be broadened and the time is at hand to do so. We wantonr tourists to see the state and rot merely rnsh through it. It is time to do something for our regionaland connecting reads. Up to this time they have bt en given the cold shoulder utterly while millions have been exper.d ea in paving and then repavng tourist roads. Why not do something for our ownpeople?
