THE GOOD OLD TIMES
There is now such a frequent
recurrance of malfeasance in
office that people are often in
clined to think that these are the
worst of times and that in the
days of the fathers probity and.
honor ruled in public office.
We should remember that only
the cases in which men prove
false to the trust reposed in
them in publicity given and that
for every one of these there are
thousands who prove by their
conduct that they hold with
president Cleveland that public
office is a public trust.
It would do our pessimists
good to read the newspaper files
a hundred years airo They will
find that the idea that the idea
that public office is a private
is no new thinjr. ,

CLEAN UP TIME .
CititS and towns every where
are cleaning up the waste accu

"clinn up" weeks , a time wen all
are supposed to tidy up the premises-
the ltreets ami alleys, and
other dlaces, for health's sake as
well E3 for appearances, Condon-
needs snch a bsy or wtek, thongh
the cl.?an td stunt might well be
made a continuousjper f ormanc e.
Every consideration of civic pride
and public health shonld prompt
us to make every day a cloan-up
day until our homes,our premises
and our streets are neat and clean

DEAFNESS PREVENT
ABLE NOT CURA
BLE At least fonr-fifths of deafness
can be prevented it proper
treatment is instituted at the on
set of the trouble. A gradual
and increasing impairment of
hearing demands immediate
attention. Any ailment of the
ears if not guarded against or
corrected may lead to a lasting
and progressive limpairment of
the hearing. The grevalence of
deafhess in the United States is
appalling. There are over one
million deaf persons - in this
country and the majority of them
become deaf during childhood.
One out Jof every ten school
children has 'defective hearing.
Many persons are socially and
economically incapacitated by
deafness. Deafness is increas
ing and active steps are neces
sary to conserve hearing. Ore
