My dear Sir:
An examination of the material
you sent in shows a very con
siderable amout of winter in
jury.
We could find no live blossoms
at all on the peach wood that you
sent in. With the cherry wood,
the blospoms in some cases have
not been killed outright, but the
bark below and the apurs are so
badly damaged that it seems
doubtful if they could even come
out at all. The astonishing thing
of it is that it seems as tho the
damage is greater just below the
blossom in the bud than it is in
the bloi-om itself. We find here
in this section , that the bloBsom'
in the bud itself will be killed
before daaaage has been done to
the wood, It seems as tho
under the conditions that you
have just had that the wood is
hurt more than the blossoms
themselves.
The pieces of limbs you sent in
show that the inner bark appar
ently is killed. However, after
our experieuee in 1919 we do not
like to come out flat-footed and
say that the material is dead.
We found that nature has
endowed the trees with such
a wonderful recuperative power
that some trees w pronounced
as dead recovered in good shape..
The biggest surprise was the
individual recuqeaative power of
varieties, some showing equal
damage later reacting in differ
ent ways. One variety would
die out for us, while another
would recover in good shape.
Some varieties showing what we
LET HE GOVERNOR BE
GOVERNOR
Because the governor sees fit
to exercise his constitutional
powers in accord with hit own
judgment and his own conscience
he is accused of fighting the
legislature. That is not a fair
charge and everyone knows it.
What is desired by the critics is
that the governor make a door
mat of himself. It is desired
that he forget his oath of ofTm
and let others assume the powers
vested in him by tne people
That is a plain and correct state
ment of the business.
Governor Pierce is justified
when he insists that he be the
governor, lie was elected. No
one else was. The governor is
justified in refusing to take die
tation from friend or foe. He is
justified if he refnses to barter
away tHs or that in order to re
tain authority elsewhere. He is

of damage would die off, while

as far as we could see would

do not want to say out and out

it recovers it shows a wonderful
