Electric Company to
Spend $4,000,000
Construction t of a $4,000,000
hydro electric power plant by the
Northwestern Eiectric company
of Portland, to commence in the
near future, has been announced
here by L. T. Merwin, vice-president
and general manager of
the company.
The plant will be one of the
largest and most complete in j
the west and will increase the
available horsepower of the.
company from 53,0o0 to 93,000.
A coucrete dam 140 feet high
and 490 feet long will be con
structed in the north fork of the
Lewis river, two miles south of
the Yale bridge, and eight miles
northeast of Amboy, Wash.
Water will be impounded in a
reservoir which will extend for
three miles behind the dam, and
will be led through caterpillar
gates set in concrete through two
penstocks to the power house.
"We have had holdings at this
point for 14 years," Mr. Mer
win said. "Recently we have
Deen doing considerable engirt
eering work and already have
spent $150,000 on the 'project.
"The project was warranted by
the fact that our load has' been
growing rapidly in past months
and our faith in the industrial
development of the Columbia
district is so firm that we feel
justified in anticipating that de
velopment and making prepar
ations to meet the coming
demand for added power facil
ities."
The Northwestern company
has bad water rights on the
Lewis river for some time, and
has had a preliminary permil
from the Federal Power Com
mission to develop the powti
facilities of the stream.
Development of' the 'project
will also necessitate construction
of a large power plant to house
the two 15,000 kilowatt turbo
generators' which will be installed
immediately upon completion of
the dam. A third generator wi
be added when consumptio
warrants.
Three plants are now operated
by the Northwestern Electric
Company. One, a hydro electric
plant, is located on the White
Salmon, and develops 20,000
horsepower: and others are
steam plants in Portland, used
generally for emergency opera'
tion. Oregon Public Utility In
formation Bureau.
