"School Times"
Schools everywhere are in
, session again, and this is so much
a matter of coura that we now
look on the annual reopening of
the public schools much as we
do on the return of the seasons.
It seems something inevitable,
something that always has been
and always will be.
We cannot know what tne
future may hold but the records
, of the past show the free public
to be a comparitively new thing.
Originating in the New Eng
land states as a by product of
the church, it made its way west
ward, well in the rear of the tide
of settlement Only slowly did
public displace the private schools
in the middle states, and not till
after the close of the Civil War
were tax supportedlchooU estab
lished in the southern states.
Now the New England idea is
generally accepted and free ele
mentary instruction provided for
all
Year by year the school tax
levy has increased until in most
states it is the heaviest single
item on the tax list.
Coincident with the growth of
the public school has been a de
crease in the opposition to it on
the part of the tax payers. The
time was when the taking of
money from a tax payer for the
education of other men's child
ren seemed to him like highway
robbery. Now the only questions
are as to the administration of
the funds raised by common
consent Once it was'Jdifficult to
find qualified teachers but now
the supply is adequate.
We have but one question un
answered. That question is :
What will Young America do?
The storehouse of knowledge has
been opened. Will aur children
treasure it or waste it?
