We suppose that the patrons
of mail order houses feel that
they cannot afford to patronize
the local merchant. They are
influenced by the laudable desire
to get the most value possible
for their money.
We wonder if there is not
ome misunderstanding as to
dual facts in the case. From
our own experience and observa
tion we should say that if we
take into consideration all the
elements of the problem we will
find the balance in favor of the
local merchant.
It may be that a catalog price
considered from the standpoint
of quantity is better than the
local merchant can offer, but
quantity is not everything.
With quantity must be consid
ered quality and convenience;
quality that we can determine
by inspection be ft re we . accept
the goods, convenience not. only
of an easily accessible stock of
goods but of the extension of
credit when required.
Few mail order patrons stop to
consider how great would be the
inconvenience of being compelled
to rely exclusively Jon stocks of
goods located in distant cities of
which they can have no more
knowledge than is conveved by
the pages of a catalog.
Mail order houses are operated
for profit and ordinarily that pro
fit is found in the lowered quality
of the goods offered.
