Are brains or "buttons" to con
trol in the section for import
ant offices this year? Are we go
ing to si'.e up the good a man can
accomplish for his community
and for the state, of Oregon, or
are we to measure him by the
lorlire he belongs to? Isn't it
really about time that brains and
character shouli be estimnted
rather than badges and grips?
Strong indignation is expressed
by many in lone over theappoint
ment of the new road master by
the county court. Especially is
it bad in view of the forthcoming
primaries. C. H. Krwin is the
appointee. We are reliably in
formed that he flew into a rage
and left lone because of the pas
sage of a city trallic ordinance
which complies with the state
law, and moved to Heprner where
he said he could park when and
where he wished, and turn around
whenever he wished. It is said
he went to Washington and pur
chased his auto licenses and then
came back to Oregon and traded
his Hudson for a Studebaker and
used the Washington tags thru
the entire year, and that he swore
vengenre against all business
men of ijne.
The death of ex-President Wil
son takes from the scene one of
the most gifted statesmen ever
produced in the United States;
gifted in historical knowledge, in
the ideals underlying the best
iwinnlur government, in the Dower
of expressing statesmanlike
thought in classic language, in
the ability to impress himself
with force upon all policies and
agencies that came within his
immediate influence. His state
papers will be reckoned by his
torians and by students of all
time as some of the ablest ever
written.- His conduct through
out the war was brilliant and
challenged the admiration of the
world. His ideals for world peace
wtre grand in conception and
purpose, yet he failed through
the weakness from which even
the greatest suffer- an unwilling
ness to give subordinates or co
workers any voice in the round
ing out of his great schemes. It
must be his and his only. This
stubbornness proved his political
downfall which distroyed his
health and ended in his death.
Tim will nroclaim Mr. Wilson
one of the truly great mentf the
world, but will also recognize his
failures and their cause.
