In liiiiiliiikt for tin' Kiuii vote in
liia i-uinliilui-y fur U. S. senator,
K. K. Kulili was present ut the
Lexington meeting Monday night

The three kidnappers of Frank
Smith of Condon last summer
will have to stand trial ill Condon
Feb. 11, as Judge 1'arker has
overruled a demurrer to their in
dictment. Dependents want a
change of plaee of trial, but the
state will oppose same.
Governor Fierce Seeking Alibis
l'erish the thought, but ean it
be that llovernor l'ien.e is now
crawlishmti mid engaged in an
earnest search foraliliis? It seems
only u few weeks Hgo that his
silver tongue was Hinging the
siren souk of how voting fur tin
income tax would shift the hunt

the broad shoulders of the rich,
and now after u scant majority
of the voters gave him w hat he
aske I he tells the convention of
couiity judges and commissioners
that reform in taxation can only
came when nullnge levies are
modified. It's funny, but that is
precisely what benighted heathen
like the editor of the Indcuend
ent hive been insisting on right
along, for with a singular den
seness it appeared to us that the
only way to reduce taxes was to
reduce them. We admit it was
an admission of bonelieudedness,
but we couldn't see how juggling
taxes aruiiud and tuking out of
one pocket what n left in an
other would be a "having." And
now the governor himself joins
the crowd. We welcome him, but
admit regret that he did not join

Farmers Favor Amendment
The economists of the farm
organization cannot tie deceived
by arguments in favor of tax-free
bonds. They know who pays the
taxes and who pays the extra
freight on charges caused by tax
free bonds. The International
Farm Congress, the National
(Grange and the American Farm
lfureau Federation lit their an
nual national sessions within the
last few weeks, emphatically de
clared in favor of the consti
tutional amendment and against
tax-tree bonds, without any
tualilications. i'lie Manufactur

Franklin F.ly came home from
Portland last Thursday morning
to be with his father.
Hal Ely is still quite ill at his

eral days to care for him.
Hen Morgan is buildi'ig a new
chicktn house. Hurrah!

Mr. and Mrs. N. Pettyjohn was

Jim Warlieid is working for
Hen Morgan. Oh, joy!
Tibie Miles was calling on his
sister, Mrs. Wartield, Tuesday.
Hot) Harbison went with some

them win a basketball game.
Mes lames John liray and Jim

Willov I'reek Poultry Farm
are now starting their incubators
to work.
Harry Huley of Heppner and
Miss Emma Hergstrom of Eight
mile, were married in Portland
last week.
J. C. Devin of Mt. Hood, was
here this week.
J ust two things have made it possible for us to give
you this 20 reduction on Tuxedo:
1. A reduction in the cost of Kentucky Burley
tobacco and in package materials, as well.
2. The consolidation of three of our big plants
into one. (Mr. Ford may not be in the
tobacco business but he is right about
consolidation.)
You know that it is the desire and policy of The
American Tohacco Co. to extend to its customers the
maximum of service.
Reducing the price of a great favorite like Tuxedo is
our idea of delivering this service.
Tuxedo is always FRESH. Every package is-

Cecil News Items
Elmer Tyler of Rhea siding,
was here visiting Noel Streeter
last Saturday. No need to say
that these boys had a good old
time unearthing all the hidden
treasures within 20 miles of Cecil.
L. L. F'unk, wife and daughter,
left Tuesday for Wasco.
John Gray of Shady Dell ranch,
near Cecil, was calling on J. W.
Osbom Monday.
Several pairs of lambs arrived
at The, Last Camp, on Tuesday,
and sheep men are preparing for
a busy time.

on business Tuesday.
Mac Smith, Cecil a weather
man, took a trip to the county
seat to investigate matters there.
Finding all well, he returned with
his fine' weather wand to Cecil
where the sun still shines.
We notice that these fine days
bring out the bench-warmers and
whittlers.
We acknowledge with thanks,
a supply of fine candy from the
lone Campfire Girls.
Mr. Amy. the Holt Mfg. Co..
representative, has been here this
week transacting business.
Alex Wilson of Boardman, has
bought a Ford car of E. K. Lun
dell. Orders for three more have
been placed.
Mr. Swanson is placing in new
flooring and shelves in his chop
mill, making his place more tidy
and convenient.
Ed Holmquist probably has an
attraction at The Dallas as he
left lone Tuesday for a return
visit to that city.
The people of Eight Mile are
now holding their annual winter
debates, the first of which was
"Resolved, that leap year is a
blessing to ail bachelors." The
negative side won; probably the
committee knew from experience
that the so-called blessing was
all bunk. ,
