MORROW COI NTT OFFICIAL PAPER
THt AMERICAN ) KLSS ASSOCIATION
TtHE question of the benefit of
good roads to any community
seems to be one that is no longer
debated. So far Morrow county
has but a few miles of permanent
surfaced roads but these have
amply proven their worth from
every point of view. Yet we are
handicapped to a certain extent
by the fact that these few roads
have not been completed to a
point where they are an actual in
vestment; they should be extend
ed; the gaps closed up. Besides
these, the program calls for ex
tensions and the building of new
market roads that will ultimate
ly connect up every section of
the county and make it possible
for all the producers to get their
products to the railroad and into
the towns readily and at a great
saving in expense. The market
road program is the real program
after all. It is the one that means
development for the county, and
as we look into the immediate fu
ture we can begin to see a divid
ing up of the farms as at present
existing, a placing of more people
on the farms and a better system
of fanning and consequent heav
ier production. Why not have this
by supporting a progressive pro
gram and boosting the bond is
sue? The opportunity is here
and should be gladly accepted.
Not New But the Truth.
WE MAY have our differences
of opinion in matter of pol
itics; we may not agree on the
subject of religion; some of us
have notions that other folks
think are crazy and other folks
have ideas we think lack in sound
reasoning; but on one point we
are all agreed: we all want to see
our home-town grow and prosper.
Some experts contend that good
trading facilities build population
and real estate values; others say
that good stores follow population,
but again, all agree that local pros
perity can never come until ade
quate trading facilities are estab
lished. Good stores are the life of any
community. Moreover we know
we cannot have good stores if
they are not profitably supported.
No town was ever built bv its in

habitants sending their money out
of town. A dollar spent in town
travels from the home to the gro
cer, to the butcher, then to tho
hardware merchant, and so on
around the whole wheel of home
trade. Spent in the town the dol
lar remains in hte town and adds
to the town's wealth. By and by
some man gathers enough of these
floating dollars, builds another
home or makes an addition to his
store, and so values increase, ben
efitting everybody. Spent out of
town the doilar has gone forever.
There are some folks who buy
their spools of cotton and now
and then a yard or two of goods
at home, but when they want to
buy a fur coat or a piano they get
out the mail order catalogue or
go out of town. They use the
home town merchant to fill their
petty needs but when he has a
chance to make a reasonable prof
it they forget him. It's scarcely
fair, is it? .And if it is, it isn't
very sensible. We are all work
ing to make the home town bright
er and better and the property of
everyone, our own included, more
valuable.

THIS has been one of the long

Oregon has experienced for years.
Portland has broken the record
for a long dry season by several

for rain are still remote. Weather

severe, so we shall have plenty of
time to cool off.
