Large numben of Leiington and
Ion people ipent the week-end at

morning of the 4th and remaining
over Sunday. It was stated by parties
up that way on Saturday that more
than 40 cars were parked on the
prairie. Out (hat way the woods were
full of people who enjoyed being in
the cool shade of the tall trees for
a day or so. Large numbers of Hepp
ner people also spent these two dyas
along Willow creek in the edge of the
timber and many going to the prair
ies out beyond. As a consequence,
Heppner was a very quiet place on
the fourth, as many others took in
the celebration at Arlington.
A, V. Wright, wife and two daugh
ters are visiting this week with their
home folks. They arrived on Satur
day from their home at San Pedro,
California, and will remain until the
first of the coming week. Alonzo has
been out at the old home place on
Rhea creek for several days visiting
his brothers, and he and his family
will spend the rest of the time with
his mother, Mrs. Martha Wright in
Heppner. He has made his home in
California for the past three years.
Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Smith and son
Bobby of Portland visited at the D.
T. Goodman home over the fourth.
Mr. Smith returned to Portland on
Sunday, being accompanied by J. L.
Li nd burg, father of Mrs. Goodman,
who has been visiting here for' the
past month. Mrs. Smith and son will
return to Portland with Mr. and Mrs.
Goodman the end of this week when
they go to the city to take in the
Elks' convention. Mrs. Smith and
Mrs. Goodman are sisters.
Miss Florence Canon, who has been
head clerk inrthe local postofflce for
the past year, has resigned and con
templates going to Portland a little
later where she is offered a position
with the postal service. For the pres
ent, the place of Miss Cason is being
filled by Mrs. Lena Coleman, who as
Miss Lena Glasscock, was chief dep
uty in the office for many years when
Mr. Smead was postmaster during
former republican administrations.
Mr. and Mrs. Chan. Curtis, who
spent the past week in Heppner as
guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
W. W. Smead, departed on Monday
for Portland, where they will make
their home while Mr. Curtis is look
ing for a location. For the past sev
eral years they have been living in
Stockton, California.
Judge Campbell and wife returned
the end of the week from a stay of
several days at Wallowa Lake. Mr.
Campbell states that Wallowa county
will have a wonderful crop this year
from all present indirationw.
Envoy Mrs. A. A. Gray and her bos
band, from the Portland headquar
ters of the Salvation Army were fn
the city over Friday on state cam
paign work. Mrs. Gray desires to
have us state to the Heppner folks
that she is very grateful for the kind
treatment received at Heppner. While
in the city Mr. Gray, who is s?n in
valid, was quite ill and required the
attention of a physician.
George Thomson and family, Wal
ter LaDusire and wife, J. O. Turner
and family, Harry Turner and fam
ily were among Heppner people going
over to Hidaway springs on Saturday
to spend the week end. They report
having had a fine time, taking in the
big swimming pool at Lehman springs
as a part of their recreation and in
cidentally getting a pretty fair coat
of sunburn.
Mrs. Ethel McKinley of Portland
was a guest the past week at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Boyer on
Hinton creek. She returned home on
Wednesday, being accompanied by
Donald Boyer, he nephew, who will
spend his vacation in hte city. Mrs.
McKinley, who is a sister of Mr. Boy
er, is engaged in the real estate bus
iness in Portland.
Frank Harwood left on Friday eve
ning for Portland. He took the Mt.
Hood loop highway into the city from
Hood River and says that it is a
wonderful drive and the scenery this
time of year is beautiful. This will
become a very popular drive for peo
ple going to and coming from Port
land and the road now is in fine shape.
L. W. Briggs, county treasurer,
who, some two weeks or more ago,
underwent a serious operation at the
Heppner Surgical hospital, is still un
der the care of the physician there
but is reported to be slowly gaining
in strength. It will be some time be
fore he is able to leave the hospital
and resume his official duties.
Sheriff McDuffee, accompanied by
Wm. Hay lor, departed on Monday for
Hot Lake, where Miss Lucile McDuf
fee has been for some time receiving
treatment. They returned last even
ing. Miss McDuffee having sufficient
ly recovered to be able to come home.
Mr. and Mrs. George Krebs and
twin sons of Cecil were visitors in
the city on Monday. They were ac
companied by Mr. and Mrs. Geo. U.
Krebs of Portland, parents of George,
who are making an extended visit at
the Cecil home of their son.
Miss Helene Curran, who has been
spending her vacation in this city
rwith her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L.
Curran, departed yesterday for Port
land to resume her duties at St. Vin
cent's hospital where she is receiving
the course in nursing.
M. L. Case and family departed on
Tuesday morning for the seashore at
Newport, where the family will re
main for a month or six weeks. Mr.
Case expects to return after a week
or ten days.
John Louy and Walt Smith were I
lone business men In the city yester
day. Mr. Louy, who it very much In
terested tn the oil development in
the vicinity of Wells Springs, is as
sured that operations will begin there
shortly.
A fine 7 H pound son was born to
Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Jones of Monte
sano, Wash., at the home of her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Vawter Crawford,
in this city on July 6th. Both mother
and baby are doing fine.
P. M. Gemmell drove to Portland
on Saturday where he met Mrs. Gem
mell and the children on their way
home from a visit of threeweeks with
relatives at Seattle. They arrived at
Heppner on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Clair Hopper of this
city have aa their guest Mrs. Hopper's
sister, Mrs. Marin, who arrived from
her home in North Dakota on Thurs
day last and will remain here for
some time.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. French of Gur
dane were visitors in this eity for a
short time yesterday while on their
way to The Dalles where Mr. French
was called on land business.
Charley Vaughn spent the week
end in Portland with his family, re
turning home on Monday.
Cyrus Aiken and family of Oak
land, Calif., have been guesU this
week at the home of Mr. Aiken's par
ent, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. C. Aiken.
They will remain here until the end
of this week when they will go to
Portland to take in the Elks' conven
tion before going on homo. Cyrus Is
engaged in the real estate buiiness
at Oakland and ia doing well. J a red
Aiken and wife are now living in
Oakland where he is with hts brother
and it was hoped that all might be
here for a family reunion on the
Fourth. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Gragg of
Salem were also here, arriving on
Friday evening and departing Sunday
afternoon. They were accompanied
by Mrs. Gregg's little daughter, June,
and a jolly good time was had by the
members of the family able to get
around the home board at this time.
Mrs. Gragg was formerly Miss Helen
Aiken.
