MORROW COINTY OFFICIAL PAPER
Poreiri Aaerttine Kepnventatf
THE AM-R1CAN 1 ) ASSOCIATION
Senator or Governor?
Oregon Voter.
GOVERNOR PIERCE will run
for re-election as governor
and not for U. S. Senator, accord
ing to inaide information publish
ed in an Orcgonhn dispatch from
Salem. Our own outside informa
tion is that no one can be certain
as to what Governor Pierce will
run for until the time has expired
for him to file or revise his candi
dacy. Governor Pierce can make
up his mind both ways with equal
positiveness and at the same rime.
But when the moment for final
decision comes, he prct-ably will
make a shrewd one, for he is a
fast thinker who can adapt him
self readily to any political emer
gency. A career in the United States
Senate has its appeal to him, an
appeal somewhat dulled by the
realization that he would have to
lay low for two or three years be
fore taking the place to which his
oratorical talents entitle him. He
hates to wait.
What he likes most about the
office of governor is that for him
it is one round of thrill after an
other. His prodigious vitality en
ables him to race hither and thith
er over the state to meet speaking
engagements. The hardships of
travel have no terrors for him.
Getting up at 5 o'clock on a win
ter's morning to catch a 6 o'clock
train after talking the night be
fore till 1 a. m. is the real life for
him. Worries of his office are
more than compensated for by the
excitement into which he finds
himself plunged whenever he does
anything that causes controversy,
and nearly every one of his of
ficial acts gets him into a glorious
row.
What his chances for re-election
will be no one can estimate this
far ahead,. for public opinion con
cerning him changes over night.
The same people who curse him
one day forgive him the next,
cheer him the day after and then
curse him when he does some
thing else that irritates. He cap
tures the sympathy of every au
dience he addresses, no matter
what its character, and he is ad
dressing more people per month
than all the other speakers in Ore
gon combined. If he could hold
the loyalty of his auditors he
could be elected to any office with
in the gift of the people, but when
they emerge from his magnetic in
fluence they do some thinking for
themselves.
Outside of a few appointees and
hungry office-seekers he has no
personal following, but he has the
capacity of voicing the prejudices
of the great mass of the people so
effectively that they shout for him
with enthusiasm while the spell
is on. No other democrat can de
feat him for whichever nomina
tion he finally wants, and no re
publican will be assured of vic
tory over him at the general elec
tion until the returns are in from
the cow counties. If he could
govern like he can talk what a
governor he would be!

Courageous Public Of
ficials. Manufacturer.
XT THEN public officials take a
hrm stand tor economy
along rational lines in public af
fairs, they are deserving of com
mendation. Since the inaugura
tion of the d'rcct primary and the
initiative in referendum, there has
been a growing tendency for leg
islators and state executives to
"pass the buck" to the people on
important measures where polit
ical issues are involved.
A bitter fight was staged in the
California state legislature to ;n
crease the gasoline tax from two
to three cents a gallon on the the
ory that if such increase was not
made the road program of Cali
fornia would be crippled. The
bill was passed on a close vote
Governor Richardson could easily
have dodged responsibility and
played politics by signing the bill
under the excuse that it could la
ter be referred to the people or
amended. This he refused to do
and clearly stated his reasons for
killing the measure. He showed
that increased taxes were not nec
essary in order to carry on syste
matic road work and he would not
sign i tax-raising measure which
in his opinion, was contrary to his
platform of economy and sound
business administration in public
Ram.
Executives who will conduct
public affairs along business
lines and who cannot be swayed
by every breath of political fancy
should have the thanks of the
people in this nation.

The Cost of Living.
National Rfpiblic.
A FEW davs ago the Depart
ment of Agriculture published
figures showing something of the
difference in he cost of living to
day and in the early part of the
nineteenth century. Then eggs
were three cents a dozen, ham
seven cents a pound and whisky
twenty-five cents a gallon. These
statistcis induced a few writers to
editorialize on the good old days
hen everything was' cheap and
everybody was happy.
But as a matter of fact the cost
of living was relatively little
cheaper than now. Many food
stuffs were low in price, but wages
were low too and money was
scarce and dear. And not all
things were cheap as compared
with now. Transportation, figur
ing rime as money, was more
costly then than at present, and
there were no five and ten-cent
stores and bargain counters in
other mercantile establishments
where household articles could be
bought for a trifling sum. Edu
cation cost more than now and
books were scarcer and dearer,
and there were many hardships
which more than made up for
three-cent eggs and seven-cent
ham.
It is true that we no longer have
the good old days. The fact is,
we never did.
