A Twinjre, or a Throb
of Pride?
ANY orphan presents an object
of sympathy, and it long has
been an established fact that ev
ery dollar spent in the rearing of
a waif to become a good citizen
was a dollar well invested econ
omically. A law-abiding man who
produces, whether it be art or po
tatoes, not only is an asset to the
nation, personally, but his possi
ble influence on future genera
tions is too great to be estimated.
The reverse can not be controvert
ed. The criminal not only is a
costly cancer on society, but his
deeds live after him, pulling down
others in the wake of his associa
tions. "Any orphan" deserves a fair
chance to make good. A great
many of them make good despite
evil environments, if they are
given a helping hand in time. A
great many revert to evil ways
because they have no anchor to
steady them in the form of pride
and love of family.
How different is th orphan
with whom the American Legion
is concerned, and for whose care
an endowment fund is being in
augurated!
Here we have the child whose
ever)' heartbeat in later life should
thrill with the knowledge that his
father was the flower of the great
est nation of the earth. His fath
er did his duty in time of stress.
His father died for his country,
made the supreme sacrifice for hu
manity, and was honored. True,
perhaps, that honor was not so
definite as one expressed in med
als, and perhaps it was. Honor
there was. An unknown soldier
lies in an honored crypt at Ar
lington. But how would you feel, Mr.
Successful Man, if you had been
homeless in boyhood, and knew
that you were in need because
your father had done his duty.
nobly and absolutely absolutely
because everything, including his
suport of you, was wiped away?
Wouldn't you be a little bitter?
And is bitterness with life a good
way to mould citizenship? Our
prisons are the answer.
The American Legion deserves
the support of every good citizen
in its endeavor to provide a home
for every homeless child of a vet
eran, if not from any other reason,
then because the veteran's de
pendent child hasn't even the
same chance of his playmate, who
is "just any orphan." Both may
fight their way to manhood, un
aided, but the veteran's orphan
will have a bitter twinge when the
flag passes by. How easily that
twinge can be changed to a throb
of pride if we do our part now.

Throwing a Scare.
Eugene Guard.
TN A bulletin of the state board
i. of health, Dr. Frederick W
Strieker, secretary, makes the
statement that of 15,674 children
born in Oregon last year, fewer
than one-third will reach maturity
physically fit. That is a statement
whose demonstrability we take the
liberty to doubt. Continuing his
fearsome summary of the sad con
dition of our children the doctor
says: '
"Of the children born last year
one in 20 will die in their first
year, 150 are mentally defective
100 have organic heart trouble,
600 have defective vision, 450 de
fective hearing and one-quarter of
tnem have adenoids and diseased
tonsils. One-half of the number
will have defective teeth and
about one-third of the 15,647 will
reach maturity in a physically fit
condition.
We will bet our last year's straw
hat somewhat used but still
workable against I Seidlitz oow-
der that the doctor can't prove all
that he says. The first and the
last statements in the paragraph
quoted are particularly dogmatic
and undemonstratable, unless the
doctor is blessed with the gift of
propnesy or clairvoyance. Light
upon the motive for such a set-out
as fhe doctor has promulgated is
shed by this further paragraph:
10 meet this condition. Dr.
Strieker suggested that physical
examinations should be conduct
ed in the schools and that a strict
watch should be kept over the con
dition of the children at all times
so that the defects that develop
may be corrected.
There is already too much med
dling with our children in the
schools and elsewhere by busy
bodies, medical and other. Care
of the physical well being of chil
dren is properly a parental, not a
state function. So-called exam
ination of children semi-publicly
and in job lots is both an affront
and a humiliation to them and
nVir parents. Such function
belongs properly to the family
doctor, if anybody, and under par
ental discretion and direction.
Children are sent to the schools
to be educated. Their intimate
care is a matter for the home.
The Strieker bulleltin shows all
the earmarks of a purposeful ef
fort to throw a scare.

IN THE seclusion of a profitable
private law practice, Lawrence
T. Harris of Eugene, former Su
preme Court justice, reiterates to
his friends that he will not be a
candidate Jor the republican nom
ination for United States senator
next year. Does he hope that per
sistent reiteration of his refusal to
become an active candidate will
create a public insistence that he
become such a candidate? It is
not a new political device. And
oftentimes it works. Judging
from his announcement upon his
recent return to Oregon that he
had not yet made up his mind to
become a candidate for re-nomination.
Senator Stanfield also wants
to test out the static in the politic
al atmosphere that he will have
to counteract. Of course Stanfield
is a condidate to succeed himself,
and it is equally certain that Har
ris is giving serious thought to the
possibilities of his own candidacy.
