Farmers as Manufac

I:KY FORD, wtso makes ten

gr' where one grew before
ar j sometimes where none grew
before has said that farming
:hould he di ne in twenty days;
and this coupled with Edison's vis
ton of twenty years ago, which
Jssclosed a manufacturing rural
curnmunitv, plus the present con
dition of the fanjier, brings sharp
ly to the front a situation of sig
nificance. Every day the farmer is being
diased out of the fields by his own
machinery. Due to improved
methods of operation he can raise
more food than the world can eat.
The result is he is always selling
on a glutted market. Finally he
rushes into the city and the city
man would rush way from it if he
knew where to go or what o do.
Thoughtful review of the farm
er's situation leads one to the be
lief that his relief will come not in
palliative legislation, but in the
adjustment of his business to the
electrical age which is now begin
ning to take its place in our econ
omic life. There is only one an
swer to the poor condition of the
farmer plus the Tiigh cost of living
for the urban population, namely,
the elimination of the idle hour.
The times of planting, cultivating
and harvesting. For the rest, his
time and investment are waste
that must be spread over the vol
ume of his product. If our farms
were equipped with small manu
facturing plants that could be k.'pt
busy producing standardized nec
essities, such for example a5
screws, nails, bolts, shoe laces,
knife handles and a thousand and
one other products, then the rainy
day would be one of activity and
profit instead of one of loafing at
a loss. One of these day-, Mr.
Ford will work out the problem
and the idle hour will be abol
ished. s-s-s
We defy California to produce
any better weather, any time, than
Morrow county Tias been enjoying
for the past two months. We had
a nasty spell in December that did
a lot of damage, to be sure, but
mother nature seems to be doing
her level best to make amends,
and what we have been enjoying
is hot to be excelled anywhere.
A friend of ours remarked to us
yesterday that he had been keep
ing tab on the weather conditions
and that our mean average tem
perature had been on a par with
that of San Diego "for the past six
months, regardless of the severe
spell in December. In the mean
time we have also had more than
the normal amount of moisture.

Tax Free Property.
Manufacturer.
TT USED to be only churches
i and schools that were tax free
property on a large scale, and
state legislatures always had some
one who enjoyed introducing a
bill to place church property on
the tax rolls.
We hear little or nothing of that
any more, but in the past twenty
two years the value of real prop
erty exempted from taxation has
risen to twenty-one billion dollars,
says a National Industrial Board.
How such a vast amount of real
estate and improvements can es
cape taxation, will become the
subject of a great deal of inquiry
and possible official investigation
Considered on top of tax-free
securities in the shape of munici
pal and state bonds, that are voted
by the people for all manner of
public purposes, the problem is a
serious one and affects all invest
ments.
