Why Not a Lincoln
Chart?
NOT even the recent ec!irc
ith a!! its thrills an J Men
ders fires the ;n;.ic'natioa in the
American hov as J."e the inajic
nsme of Lincoln. The mysteries
of nature may arps'i us ail. hut it
is the human touch that stimu
lates to action ail latent -qualities
of the soul. To the American lad
Lincoln embodies the greatest
combination cf characteristics
ever found within the breast of
single man. He emphasizes the
spirit of human tenderness, cf un
daunted cm-rase, of firmness anu
rigidity of purpose, and perhap
above all the spirit of tolerar.ci
and human understanding. Litth
if anything may be sa;d of Lincoln
that has not commanded the ex
pression of the world's great
minds. All humanity pays trib
ute at his shrine.
It is recorded that -.hen he va
walking to the national capitoi
one day he said the great regret
of his life was that he had been
denied the adyantage cf a collegi
education. What an inspiratiot
in those words for the youth of
today showered as he is with edu
cational opportunities. We won
der if the boys and girls in thi:
town hae learned a real lesson
from the life or from this thought
of Lincoln, or do they think of him
only in the terms of his immortal
Gettysburg address. What a won
derful thing if we used the legacy
he has left us. if each of us tool
measure of the man. considered
the characteristics that made him
great and then by close self-examination
found out in what pro
portion those characteristics rest
ed in ourselves. Perhaps we
might sense love of humanity as
the dominant note, and then strive
to measure somewhat to the stand
ard. We might make a little chart
and examine it from month to
month to see how our percentages
are getting along, giving 100 to
Lincoln as the standard of a real
American. It might prove more
interesting than even the cross
word puzzle and really give a
meaning to hundred per cent
Americanism.

THE proposal to add another
cent or so to the gasoline tax
in Oregon by the present legisla
ture, is only following out the pol
icy that was started in this state
when, in 1319, that commodity
was made to bear a tax of 1 cent.
Oregon started something at this
time, and at each succeeding ses
sion of the legislature this tax has
been increased until at this pres
ent session it is proposed to make
it six cents. California and a num
ber of other western states as well
have followed the lead of Ore
gon. In the natural course of
events it would seem that the in
crease in the use of motor vehicles
and consumption of gasoline
would be about sufficient to care
for the upkeep of the highways,
and there would appear to be no
excuse for making one particular
product or class of citizens bear

Answer to last week's puzzle.
000 to $865,000,000.
Speaking before the regular
semi-annual meeting of executive
officials of the government, Presi
dent Coolidge said:
"The people of this nation have
been not only patient under the
heavy burden of war taxation,
they have been heroic. Their bur
den of taxation has been greatly'
lightened, but our fight must be
for further reduction of the bur
den of the people.
"Our nation is prosperous. Its
prosperity is due largely to the
economy which has been effected'
in the cost of government. It is
this economy that has encouraged
business, abolished unemploy
ment, made wages high and work
plentiful. It is this economy that
has enabled us since Iu21 to re
duce our public debt so materially.
It is this economy which has en
abled the reduction in taxes."

American experts have demonstrat
ed that by packing in vacuum the tea
leaf while hot from the firing pans, all
the delicate flavors of the leaf are re
tained. We now have in stock a fresh sup
of vacuum packed Tea at the same prices
that formerly were asked for the old
style way.
They come in 1-4-lb., 1-2-lb. and
1-lb. tins.
Try a can the next time you are in
need of Tea.
