They refuse to heed them. hen thev feel they may not be caupht, and strenuously resent any hone.-t effort to enforce them. These are the traffic laws of su.te and towns. A more forceful illustration of this point could not be found than in a recent number of the Oregon Motor ist, owned and published by the Ore pun State Motor association, which deliberately sets it.-eif down as an ad vocate of lawlessness. It devotes ir.it re than two pages to the "Gold rhil War on Tourists," giving a list '"of tne names of the unfortunate victims of the Goid Hill speed trap durirg the period from July 19 to Sept, y." asking. "Can we develop tourist business while such condi tions are permitted to exist?" At the close of the list appears this comment: "Every motorist can help put an end to the speed trap evil by joining the motor association. The ;ist consists of the names of drivers arrested, the speed at which they were "alleged" to be traveling at the city limits and the line levied against each. Of the 139 names giv en, all but three were going at a speed of SO miles or more at the city limits, and one was going 60 miles an hour, while -1 were traveling 40 miles or faster. State law permits a speed not to exceed 30 miles an hour on highways out sice of cities, and 20 miie cities. Ey the record, every person of the was violating the law when arrested. The "speed trap" is mere ly a method by which the actual speed ean be determined. So the com plain; of the iaw-breakir.g Oregon State Motor association is the com plaint of every violator of law: anger at being caught. If the law is undesirable, let it be changed. But for the present it is the law jut the same as every other law on the statute books. Enter prise Record-Chieftain.
