Today Thanksgiving Day
has f-ectnie such a commonplace
occurrence in the minds of the
grcM majority of the people of
thi iand of ou-x that we fail, ut
terly, to rraP its full significance.
It is cur sreat annual feast day;
.".II preparations are made to the
e.id that on this day we will sit
ourselves doun around the festive
board, and there gorge our physi
cal bodies with all of the good
things to eat that it has been pos
sible to get together; and with
multitudes it is simply a holiday,
with no thought given to the real
significance of the day. Perhaps
this will never be changed in the
minds of many people, for we are
wild about entertainment and
pleasure, never stopping to con
sider that as individuals, and as a
nation of people, blessed beyond
measure above any other peoples
of the earth, we should at least
once a year be as reverent and
thankful as were those early Pil
grim fathers who first established
this annual thanksgiving to Al
mighty God for the blessings of
life and plenty in their new-found
land of freedom.
Someone has said: "We should
be thankiul first for Thanksgiving
Day. Thanksgiving Day is a fact.
It signifies something. It is the
fruit of human experience. It
testifies that the feeling of grati
tude is an abiding sentiment in
human hearts. We give thanks to
Cod because we must. There is
something in the universe about
us or above us that calls forth this
feeling of thankfulness. Thanks-
givng Day is itself an evidence of
the existence of a good Cod. It is
proof that the good God has made
Himself knan to men that they
want to set apart a day every year
in which they may bear witness to
H is goodness " This no doubt
expresses the real sentiment of
one who recognizes fully that all
blessings come from the God on
high who rules over the universe
and destinies of men, and that has
the dispositon to return to that
being his sincere thanks for the
blessings and comforts of life.
Yet so many are thoughtless of
these tilings, and our great nation
al day of thanks means really
nothing.
Why not on this day take time
to consider for a short period the
many blessings we, as a nation, j
and as individuals of that great
nation, are enjoying. A little rev- j
erence and thanks to Him who
rules above is a good habit, and :
for those who have not the time ,
or the dispostion to do this daily, :
it would help some if they could
stop and breathe a short prayer of
thankfulness for just this one day
in the year.

disposition on the part of the
coming legislature to do awav
with the office of prohibition di
rector in this state, due. no doubt, !
to the unpopularity of Geo. L.
Cleaver, the present incumbent.
There is no small amount of prop
aganda along this line. Vet any
man in that place would be un
popular, especially with those
who desire to violate the prohibi
tion law. Cleaver seems to have
tried hard to enforce the law, and
appears to be honest in his efforts
along that line, and no doubt the
more nearly he succeeds, the less
popular he becomes w ith the boot
lcgers and moonshiners and all
who are their patrons. We have
a strong element in the state who
do not desire to see the prohibi
tion law enforced; we have them
right here in Morrow county, and
events of recent date are evidence
of the truth of the statement that
no enforcing officer is popular, no
difference what methods he may
use to enforce the law. Cleaver
has become unpopular, it is true,
and Governor Pierce might be in
duced to put a better man in his
place, but we do not believe the
people of the state will stand for
doing away with this office. The
Oregon prohibition law requires
that there be a state director to
aid in its enforcement. It can't
be left to the federal and county
officers entirely.
