W. E. Brown was here the end of
the week from hie homo at Kedlands,
California. He came to arrange for
the removal of the body of hie moth
er from the family lot in the Masonic
cemetery to the cemetery at Redlandi
where it will be rf interred betide the
crave of her husband, the late John
C. Brown. It wu the requeit of Mr.
Brown before hie death that thii bo
done. Shipment of the body war made
to Kedtanda from Heppner the first
of the week. Mr. Brown returned to
Walla Walla, where he will join Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Evani on the return
trip to Southern California where Mr.
and Mrs. Evans will apend the winter.
Al Henriksen came over from the
Pendleton ranch the first of the week
remaining until after election. He
brought to this office a sample of the
fine potatoes he raised in the garden
there this season, and we can testify
that they are A No. 1. He did not
know what the variety is, but a few
carloads of them would have been tine
to place on the Heppner market. The
garden on the Pendleton place, Al
states, needs but little irrigation, and
these potatoea were raised entirely
without it.
Dr. A. D. McMurdo and Postmaster
Smead returned from the mountains
on Friday They put in several days
hunting deer. Dr. Mark Leach of
Pendleton and Maurice Smead of
Portland were also in the party. Mr.
Smead killed two bucks and the doc
tors got one each. Mr. Smead has the
thanks of the G.-T. force for a fine
sample of his big buck, one of the
largest that haa been captured this
season by any of the Heppner nim
rods. It, was excellent meat.
E. A. Kelly was down from Helix
for a few days the first of the week,
coming in time to cast his vote at the
county election and also to attend to
some other business affairs. Mr. and
Mrs. Kelly are living at Helix for the
winter, and Mrs. Kelly has a school
near there. He expects to g into
business in the Umatilla county
town.
Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Matlock o.' Al
derdale, Wash, visited with friends
here for a day or so the first of the
week. They will go to Victor Mon
tana, for the winter. Mr. Matlock
had his sheep there for the summer
range and decided not to move them
back to Alderdale, the range and foed
onditions being very poor there.
Dan Stalter arrived home from the
mines of Heppner Mining company in
the Greenhorns on Friday, getting
here in time to cast his vote. Mr.
Stalter is more enthusiastic .han
ever over the outlook at the mines
where he has been working so long
and faithfully, and feels that succi.
has at last been attained. Samples of
ore from the mine are on display at
First National Bank.
Lester Doolittlo spent several days
in the vicinity of Ukiah the last week
While he hoped to get a deer, he was
successful in killing a small brown
bear instead, and bear meat has been
the luxury at the Doolittle home
since. He returned home on Satur
day.
