THE AMERICAN PKK&S ASSOCIATION
A JUNE THANKSGIVING.
OUR best Thankspivinr day is at
hand. Congress has adjoamed;
the Republican convention is out of
the way; candidates have been chos
en, and the platform adopted; and in
a few days the Democratic rtherinp
In New York will be a matter of
history. This ended, we can stretch
ourselves and feel free to devote a
little time to the restoring- of busi
ness and the developing of the coun
try. We may be Republicans, we may
be Democrats, or Socialists or In
dependents or what not, but when
all is said we are mutually Ameri
cans and the prosperity of America
must be our first concern.
From now until election of coarse
the political pot will seethe. We shall
bear of plots and counter plots, of
charges and counter charges. We
shall experience efforts to frighten
us into one line of action or cajole
us into another.
Now is the time for us to get out
our thinking caps, dust the moths
from the warp and woof, seek a clar
ity of vision and a calm analysis of
those issues presented that may af
fect the business of the nation; so
that we may not be led down blind
alleys because some brilliant orator
draws a red herring across the trail;
for after all the nation's growth and
the happiness of the people always
is in proportion to the material pros
perity of the nation.
There is no necessity to allow a
national election to upset business if
the people retain their poise. True
the average man is partisan, but be
has grown out of being led to sacri
ficing welfare solely for party vic
tory. He is partisan nowadays be
cause he believes his party will best
serve his country. He knows while
one set of party principles may be
better than another that the advance
ment of America does not depend on
any party but upon the honesty and
industry of the people, and because
the American people are in the main
honest and are in the main thrifty
and ingenious. The man who bets
against America under any party rule
is foolish and bound to lose. So let
us believe what we will and vote as
we want, but stand as a unit for
America.

The eagle will scream in Heppner
this 4th of July, and in connection
with the big Chautauqua the folks
will have a lot of good entertain
ment. There will be two days of cel
ebrating and everyone will want to
enjoy the Chautauqua programs on
these two days, so why not buy sea
son tickets and get in on the whole
show, or just as much thereof as it
is possible for you to attend. The
buying of season tickets will be a
boost for the local committee, and
the cost will be but little more for
the entire week than what you may
have to pay for single admissions to
the entertainments you wish to at
tend. Thick it over. Season tickets
can be had any day now and are
to be found in various business
houses about Heppner.

VOLUMES OF NEW LAWS.
AMERICAN'S are a unit in agreeing
that the country is being bur
dened to death with useless laws. No
one denies that all departments of
government have hundreds of unnec
essary employees. No one could pos
sibly doubt that taxation is exorbi
tant and mounting higher every day.
Practically every candidate for
public office denounces extravagance
in government, demands early relief,
and pledges his services to a policy
of reduction. Every election ia a
paper victory for the forces of econ
omy and retrenchment.
Yet, in spite of it ail, the public
sees each succeeding administration
spend more money than its predeces
sor, create more offices and bureaus,
enact more statutes (an average of
1U.O00 new laws annually,) and lead
the eountry deeper into the wilder
ness of confusion and profligacy.
Only those men holding public of
fice, who, when casting their votes.
