THOSE n.or.ter who broke the
trail? to Oregon eighty years afro,
rave liit'e thought to books other
than the Hih e. the dictionary and
te s.np book. They pave atill less
U h production of fiction, poetry
or historical romsne.
They were living poetry of the
grandest and most heroic sort. Ro
mance could not surpass in interest
teir own achievements and adven
tures. But with passing of the years and
with their emancipation from the
b&ck brraUrg and soul testing toil
of the Fuhjupation of the wilderness,
thee pioneer souls bepan to produce
poets and writers such as Samuel
Fimnson. Col. E. D. Faker. Joaquin
Miller. Edwin Markham and others.1
who in the main, however, only at- !
tested the biblical truth regarding
the prophet" and "hi? own country."
Samuel Simpson di3 without having
. received one hundredth part df the
praise and understanding we now
free'y accord him. Joaquin Miller and
E-dwin Markham received the first re
cognition of their genius not in Ore
gon but in another state and another
country.
It is different today. There is an
awakening consciousness throughout
Oregon to the value and worth of
her creative workers, especially her
writers. Stimulated and encouraged
now, they are producing work that
is in quantity and quality arresting
national attention. Oregon writers
stand today at the dawn gate of state
and national acclaim. The eyes of
the nation are turning to witness
Oregon's climb to literary ascend
ency. With the realization of such an
awakening consciousness we turn
with pleasure to the latest produc
tion from the pen of an Oregon writ
er, "The Skyline Trail" by Mary Caro
lyn Davies, a poet of national refuta
tion and a daughter of pioneers. In
this book she depicts in vividly color-
ful and sympathetic verse the Ore
gon country that we as a pioneering
people know and acclaim.
We are quick to note that here is
a true Oregon spirit singing Ore
gon 's songs; a book that sons and
daughters of Oregon, and all who
have found joy within her borders
cannot but read with a sense of. ex
ultation. It is Oregon singing.
While this book is a decided ac
complishment, it is not the only one
rising from the country of "The Sky
line Trail." The past year has wit
nessed a steadily increasing number
of Oregon productions placed on the
market by eastern publishers who
approve the caliber of the material
put out by our writers. Can we
with such national interest and sup
port, afford not to respond to our
writers our poets and authors the
state's own voice speaking? Shall
we not rather extend our hands and
rise with them to our place in the
sun?

CROP CONDITIONS.
MANY exaggerated stories have al
ready gone out from Eastern Ore
gon regarding crop conditions, and as
usual the exaggerations are of the
detrimental kind. The truth is none
too encouraging, but the statements
that have gone abroad have a bad ef
fect, and the circulating of discour
aging reports locally unduly effects
the commtfhity.
This has been an exceptionally dry
year, and the grain in some sections
further east has suffered and a con
tinuation of the hot winds of last
week would have caused a great loss
in Wasco and adjoining counties. As
it is, unquestionably some damage
has been done, and this will increa.se
if weather conditions are unfavor
able during the next two weeks.
But on the other hand rain in the
near future, or the .following of the
unusual dry spell with an usual wet
spell, would mean another big erop.
It is as well to look forward toa
change for the better as to a contin
utionof the worst.
Damage reported done to fruits and
vegetables was greatly exaggerated,
and the market gardens have large
crops of the nnest produce that ever
