THE OIL QUESTION-
The Consolidated Motor Freight Lines, Inc.,
of Oakland, Calif., has solved its lubrication
problem by standardizing on Zerolene.
Independent Tests Verify Claims
Subjecting the anti-western oil superstition to the
test of actual comparison in service, this Com
pany verified independently our claims that
Zerolene will lubricate the modern automobile
engine as well or better than any oil on the
market, irrespective of price, and whether of
eastern or western origin. A part of their letter
follows:
"During the past three or four years we have exper
imented with various brands of eastern and western
lubricating oils, including Zerolene oil. The results
of these tests have proved to our satisfaction that
Zerolene lubricates our equipment with the greatest
efficiency.
"Our recent decision to lubricate our trucks exclu
sively with Zerolene oils has resulted in the reduc
tion to a minimum of mechanical difficulties which
were due to faulty lubrication."
Less Carbon Better Gasoline
Mileage
Why pay tribute to a superstition?
The use of Zerolene, of the proper
body, will not only cut down your
oil bill, but .give you better contin
uous lubrication, and better lubri
cation means greater gasoline
mileage, less carbon, lower upkeep
costs, and a longer life for your car.
Insist on Zerolene, even if
it does cost less.

FOOT AND MOUTH
DISEASE
Prom Stat Board of Bclth.
Foot and mouth diea.ve U an acuta
and highly communicable infection
which occurs chiefly in cattle and
other cloven-hoofed animals. The
virua of thii dieeae is of historic
interest, ainco it was the first to be
defined as filterable and ultra micro
scopic. This means that it will pass
th rough pores of the finest of filters,
and scientists are not able to demon
itrate the organism under the micro
scope. It Is essentially a disease of
cattle, but it also attacks sheep and
wine. In cattle it causes small, fine
blisters in the mouth and on the
skin between the hoofs. There is a
characteristic "slobbering, a lick
ing and smacking of the Hps as
though the animal were attempting
to rid Itself of foreign material ad
hering to the side of the mouth.
Lameness frequently occurs. The

animal suffers a loas of appetite, ama-1
elation and marked diminution in
tha quantity of milk. Mora rarely
tha eruption appears on the adder,
and it ia this localization that is
chiefly responsible for the virus in
the milk. Tha time that tha disease
appeara after infection is from two
to six days. The disease haa a very
low mortality, generally from 1 to
S per cent, but its highly infectious
nature makes it one of the highest
economic importance. Tha attack lasts
normally from ten to twenty days,
but haa been known to continue for
a year. It has been demonstrated in
tha recent epidemic in California that
thia disease is not easily controlled,
and radical measures, therefore, must
be taken to stamp it out. The dis
ease is extremely prevalent in Eu
ropean countries and carries great
economic loss.
The virus is found in the contents
of the blister, in the saliva, dis
charges from the eyes, in tha milk,
and in excretory material. Infection
takea place directly, aa by licking
and sucking, or indirectly through
infected manure, hay, utensils, drink
ing troughs, barnyards, etc.
Human beings are not frequently
Infected, although it is by no means
rare for children to contract the dis
eaae through drinking raw milk from
diaeased animals. It may also result
from the transference of other secre-
tiona or exudations to tha mouth.
After two to Bra or even ten daya the
characteristic eruption developa in
the mouth, on the skin, hande, and
feet, with swelling, burning, and
numbness. The secretion of saliva
is increased and the little blisters
break down and form ulcera. The
disease is self-limited and the ulcers
heal, leaving no sear. Fortunately
the disease is rare in man, and there
are no permanent untoward effecta.
Health authorities are adviaed to
use every precaution to prevent the
entrance of the infection into their
state. All shipments from the infected
area should be passed on by tha state
veterinarian and the local health offi
cials. This precaution should be es
pecially observed by those living in
ports of entry. Report all auspicious
conditions to the State Veterinarian,
Salem, Oregon, or tha State Health
Officer, Portland, Oregon.
