THE GAZETTE-TIMES. HEPPNER. OREGON, THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1923, PACE FOUR College Prof. Dope on Gives Coueism (hh4 of TearMm la Sow tot D-nt4. Xothiftf New in It, However University f Or gn. Euen. July 10. "There ii nothir.f new in Coo ifo," iUtrd Dr. Rayinond H. heol r, inftrnctor in the department of ri eye ho! opr. in hi ddrrt before the j Kumir.er urnool Kiion or the subject I "The ryrho!oglcml Pi of Coue- j 'Tone won hU wy Into tie heart nd mind of people for variou rc onu," Buid Dr. Wheeler. "There if a certain myteriousnes about Coue hm. Now and then Coue makes cur es, jot at individual cure there aelven, for such troultlen hysteri cal blindness or hysterical deafness can only be cured by the me meth od which initiated them that of sug gestion." The principal prop in the psychol ogical basis for Coueisra is, aays Pr. Wheeler, that of fuppestion, both out aide supjreftion and auto-suppestion. The field of suppestion is a larpe and important one and often evidence obtained in experiment is not cer tain, but that it is a most potent psychological factor is undeniable. Dr. Wheeler cited cases of experi ments on an individual in an hypnotic state who had two burns, but by sug gestion one of them developed no fur ther than a dry orch while the other wa more serious. Savapes who go through certain rites before bat tie which they believe makes them impervious to wounds are that able to reach the enemy though pierced with wounds, so strong ia the power of supp-estion which makes them be-! lieve themselves unharmed. "Mental healing is a special case of sucjrehtion," said Dr. Wheeler. "It is the same principle that is leading to the gradual use of music in hos pitals to calm an individual's fears before an operation; because it is ft recognized fact that if a patient goes under the anaesthetic expecting to fight it he will fight it. The "Every day in every way" slogan, said the speaker, is energiz ing because it is optimistic; easy be cause it is rhythmic "It is a gradual process of preparing ourselves a gradual process of suggestion. It both cures and creates. It is apt to lead us into thinking nothing is wrong with us when there is some thing wrong. The function of mind is control and supgestion is only a special rase of control. Kind it an aiwt and also a liability." Speaking of Coue himself Dr. Wheeler said that the book on aelf healirg. popularly attributed to Dr. Coue is not the product of his pen but was written without hi know ledge or consent. This fact still fur ther proves that there is nothing new in Coueism, that it is merely a case of suggestion and that the possibil ities of suggestion have been reeog niied and practiced for ft long time. FARM POINTERS Must Stop Before Crossing R. R. Track Imptu to the Careful Crossing campaign row being carried on by the railroads will be given in Cali fornia after Auftist SI when the new California Motor Vehicle Act passed by the last legislature becomes effect ive. The new law provides that oper ators of all motor vehicles carrying passengers for hire, school buses and motor trucks carrynig explosives or inflammables, must come to a complete stop before crossing the tracks of any steam railroad or of any interurban or suburban electric railway. These provisions of the act are in cluded in Section 136. and a penalty of a fine of not exceeding $500 or of imprisonment for not exceeding six months or both is provided for vio lations of the section. Operators of the vehicles men tioned in the section must bring their machines to a stop within not less than ten feet nor more than BO feet from the nearest rail of the track being approached and then look and listen for approaching trains. Oil Fields Promise Real Drilling Soon New developments in the Crook County oil fields have been taking nlace within the oast few days. A load of timbers for a drill were sent to the Suplee section Saturday and rumor has it that there will be more loads of supplies and equipment to follow. Neil Bertrandias made a hur ried trip to the fields Saturday and returned to Portland Monday. The holdings leased by the Blue Mountain Oil company include ap proximately 140.000 acres extending from Post to Suplee, according to Bertrandias, field manager of the company, who expects to return -o Prineville soon. Central Oregonian, (PrinevilleV .From O. A. C. Experiment Station.) All ages and varieties of fruit trees are attacked by flat borers. The young trees probably suffer the most seriously. A high percentage of young trees are killed their first or second season especially where high temper atures ard prolonged drouth occur. The borer attacking apple trees works mostly just under the bark, at or above th surface of the ground. Drainage in experimental fields at O. A. C. has doubled ti.v crop yield. Before d rani age on some lands the yield was so small that profit was un certain. The larger crop obtained af ter drainage has made good profits. The larger number of pigs market ed in Oregon are light weight, and are therefore growing as well as put ting on fat during the finishing per iod. To get the best results, careful attention must be given to balancing the ration so that enough protein and mineral matter wilt be provided to develop muscle and bone. The finish ing period need not exceed sixty days unless a rising market warrants longer feeding. The first injury to the hop red spider is usually in the form of small pale specks over the leaves. These specks tend to blend giving the fol iage a pale green or yellow appear ance as the injury increases. Some buckling of the foliage and an un thrifty appearance of the vines are further warnings to the grower of the presence of the spider. The multivane fan for recirculat ing the air in the new type of drier developed at the Oregon Experiment station, is the most economical, and efficient. It ib small and compact, economical in horse power, and de livers a larger volume of air than any other fan of equal size. Infectious abortion of dairy cows, a disease estimated to cause an an nual loss of some 2 million dollars, has been entirely eliminated from i some herds by application of the blood tests conducted by the experi- j ment station. Attempts are now n der way to clean up entir communi ties. No cure is known but methods of spread are and control is possible. A new station bulletin tells how.
