Sum V. Cochran and J. L. Cochran
and family of Monument, father and
brother of Mrs. Frank Turner, spent
Tuesday in Heppner viftiting with the
Turner family. Lawrence and hia
family but recently arrived at Mon
ument from Nevada, where they have
resided for a number of years and
where Mr. Cochran was engaged in
ranching. Having disposed of his
interests there, he is contemplating
taking up his abode in Oregon.
C. C. Calkins passed through the
city yesterday forenoon on his way
from Spokane to Sherman county. He
had time for just a short visit here
and did not have an opportunity to
greet many old friends. Being at the
head of a company that is very busy
putting out the Calkins wheat treat
ing machine he can find little time
just now for visiting. He reports
his family doing well and Mrs. Cal
kins quite improved in health.
Ralph Kinley, who is agent for the
Calkin's wheat treating machine in
Morrow and Gilliam counties, return
ed the end of the week from the lat
ter county where he found the crop
conditions good. It is his opinion
the Calkins machine will be pretty
wheat by the copper carbonnte meth
wheat by the copper carbonate meth
od, and the demand for it is growing
rapidly.
Mrs. Henry Aiken and son .foe are
guests this week at the home of Mr.
Aiken's parents, Mr. and Mr. G. C.
Aiken, in this city. They will fo on
from here to Portland whoro they
will join Mr. Aiken. Mr. and Mrs.
Aiken have been making their home
in Salt Lake City since leaving Hepp
ner about two years ago, but now ex
pect to make their residence in Port
land. Chas. Krwin, extensive wheatraiser
of lone, was up to Heppner on Satur
day. Mr. Krwin had just returned
from a visit over in the Pasco coun
try where he had been called on bus
iness. His section of the county will
be in the wheat harvest right after
the 4th and the wheels will be turn
ing lively then on until the grain is
in the sack.
John Pie per and his son, Arnold
Pieper, wheatraiscrs of the Pieper
canyon section, were In Heppner Sat
urday. Mr. Pieper states that their
harvest will begin in about three
weeks, the crop being practically
matured now and if the cooler wea
ther will just hold on a few days
longer the quality of the grain will
be No. 1.
Emmet Cochran came in from his
Grant county ranch on Monday. He
states that there has been an abun
dance of rain over that way this
season and the outlook for crops of
all kinds was never brighter. The
hay crops will be very abundant, and
grass on the range is excellent.
Wld Palmatecr, wheat miser of the
Morgan section, was in this city on
Saturday. It will not be long before
the farmers down that way wilt be
in their wheat harvest and cutting
one of the best crops in their his
tory. Frank Turner arrived home on
Monday from Grant county where ha
completed his shearing season. Stor
my weather made it slow work and
the shearing game was much delayed,
Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Van Vactor and
on Sam drove up from their home at
The Dalles on Monday to attend the
funeral of the late S. VY. Spencer.
They returned home that evening.
Mr. and Mrs. VYm. Huebner -of
North Sand Hollow, were visitors in
the city on Saturday
