The Dalles, June 21. Dalles Post
wants to hear from the acquatic stars
of Oregon who belong to the Amer
ican Legion. A three-day water car
nival will be held here during the
week of conventions next month, and
Don W. Yantis, who used to hang
up records himself, is in charge.
Dalles Post and local businessmen
will offer prizes for the winners, and
it is hoped to establish a custom
which will last as long as there are
enough legion members left with en
ough limber joints to take to the
water.
The prizes have not yet been an
nounced, but they will be substantial
enough to attract the best swimmers.
The Columbia is a mile wide at The
Dalles, and ambitious swimmers can
paddle all the way down to Astoria,
if they want to, so there is plenty of
space for all competitors. There will
be swimming events for women too.
The post's catchword for the conven
tion is "Bring your uniform," but
equally well it can urge legionnaires
to bring bathing suits too.

Homey Philosophy for 1922
Russel Sage, in his day the weal
thiest money lender in the world,
said he bought his straw hats in De-

July so he could save money, an
then folks wondered why he was rich
an' they were poor. Maybe it was
good reason to him, but was he evef
rich in all his life They tried to blow
hiln up with a bomb, he was always
scared to death, he never knew the
joy of life, he didn't get a chance
to mix with his fellow men. The
chan that wears a felt hat when straw
hats are in season don't fit, neither
does the fellow who buys 'enl ths(t
