was J. A. Stine, who moved the plant
in and set it up, and the writer has
often heard Nels .Magnuson remark
about bringing it here from the rail
road and helping to get things ready
for putting out the first issue. After
running the paper for a short time,
Stine transferred his interests to
John V. Redington, and after five
years of a romantic and precarious
existence under his direction, it was
sold to Rev. Henry Rasmtis, but be-
fore the end of a year Rasmus sold
out to Otis Patterson. From him
the editorship passed to Corleis Mer-
ritt, then back to Redington again,
the latter disposing of the paper to
Warnock and Michell ; Warnock later
bought the interests of Michell and
ran the paper for several years, when
he sold it to Vawter Crawford. This
was in December, 1910. The Gaz

per cent of the voters in the proposed
new counr' must vote for the mea
sure and at least 35 per cent of the
voters in the old portions of the
county or counties affected. The
legislature, of course, has the priv
ilege of repealing or amending this
law, so the next legislature might see
fit to repeal the law and create any
new county or counties that it saw
fit. At any rate, it will require a lot
of work to create the necessary sen
timent to carve out a new county
from Morrow and Umatilla, and we
are quite sure this sentiment does
not exist at present.
We believe, also, that ultimeately
division of this sort will be made,
but there are more important matters
that should engage the attention of
the residents of both Morrow and
Umatilla counties, and which the
people of the irrigated districts are
vitally interested in. This is pretty
ell expressed in the following con
tribution to the Boardman Mirror,
appearing in the last issue, and if
we were to guess its authorship
would say that Sam Boardman is
the guilty party, and here is his pre
sentation of the case:
A news item tells of a division of
Umatilla and Morrow counties to
make a new county comprizing the
territory from Echo to Boardman
This is the second proposal that we
have received in the past two months,
Arlington submitted a similar sug
gestion, cleaving the front stoop
from the back porch of Gilliam,
county, Morrow county likewise.
What is there about us that produces
the appearance of "hicks ? Just why
do these off-side county mavericks
submit to us plans of a separate
greatness? When the proper time
comes, the bell cow will call in these
two long horns and a county will be
born radiating from Boardman,
which in time will become a state.
We view these present proposals
with suspicion. We suspect a "lemon
sour" in the form of a delinquent tax
list which runs in the eighties. Just
why should we mingle our purity
with this European skin sealer.
The farming brother to the west now
has its dirk aimed at our heart in
deliberately pilfering the 0. W. high
way away from Willow creek to Ar
lington. And they would call us
county brothers. If it ever comes to
pass, we plan to wear shirts that
spike to the body.
These outbursts for new counties
come from the smallest of men. You,
off. In the above you have the ans
wer why Oregon is the "runt"of the
west. In your childish way, you in
dividually try to lick the pink from
your candy stick. You would create
a new county by adding new taxes
to your tax welted body. In your
"deep" anger you fail to see that it
Your deep chested development may

powerdam but the haze from your

city limits. Umatilla, let Pendleton
nurse the county grief. Pendleton,
quit trying to whittle the frozen par
snip of a cut-off. Arlington, let the
O. W. follow natures trail of less
resistance instead of trying to pull
it over mountains for the sake of
pelf. Until you do these things, Ore
gon will remain the hermitage of a
dolt ridden race.

The Danger Point
in trying to save on painting
Repairs Cost More Than Paint
WHEN the paint on your
property begins to check
and crack, it is time to paint
agatn. Unless your house is
protected by a smooth, elastic
film of durable paint, decay will
set in and rapidly depreciate it.
Decay is expulsive and wasteful.
Price lumber alone, to get an idea
of what it will cost to repair or re
build. Paint saves this cost.
The best paint is the most econom
ical in the long run. It spreads easily
saves labor cost. It covers a larger
area ?er gallon than "cheap" paint.
But most important, the best paint
serves five or more years longer than
"cheap" paint.
We have been making the best
paints for 73 years. They are scien
tific in formula and preparation. They
meet the weather conditions in the
West.
They contain the finest materials

portions. They are the best paints

There would seem to be little sen

The Telephone
Instrument
The telephone is a highly sensitive, delicately
adjusted instrument. Think of it without re
gard to distance, instantaneously reproducing
every tone of the human voice.
The quality of its service, m great measure,
depends upon careful use.
As with your watch, automobile or piano
the more care, better results.
Among the "out of order" reports received by
the company, many result from the carelessness
of the subscriber. A telephone may fall from
desk or stand, breaking the mouthpiece or throw
ing the apparatus out of adjustment. The cord
may become twisted; meaning a "noisy" line.
A damp cloth laid on the cord or the moisture
from an open window may cause the "short cir
cuit" and an entire interruption of service.
All of these things are avoidable with the
exercise of slight care. In protecting the tele
phone equipment you are protecting your own
service.
