Most business men have this failing they are
swept off their feet when business booms.
We hit prosperity. Then starts the trouble. Every
body buys everything in sight and the merchants
are caught in their own trap. They start advertis
ing to beat the band. A riot of selling follows, the
merchants OVEU ADVERTISE and OVERSELL
THE MARKET. Demand for goods keeps up and
then comes the trip to the bank to borrow for ex
pansion. Then whatf Shortage and rising prices a riot
of buying before prices tilt to the top and a wild
spree of advertising to keep the game going.
Suddenly there comes a halt. Buying slows up,
and timid unbusinesslike merchants curtail adver
tising and the buying halt continues. Then adver
tising is stopped and business becomes stagnant.
When trade needs no stimulus the merchants buy
space like drunken sailors, but when trade needs

I Additional advances to producers
; of wheat who are members of the
, Oregon Co-operative Grain Growers
have recently been mailed from the
headquarters office in Portland. This
additional distribution of funds has
been made possible by the sales of
the organization during the past few
months which exceeded original ad
vances. It raises the total now in
the hands of members to from 65
cents to 75 cents a bushel, and am
our ts in all to $326,719.
In Morrow county alone more than
$70,000 has been received by mem
bers of the association.

Normal Summer School
at Pendleton Next June
Pendleton, March 20. Teachers
of Eastern Oregon will be afforded
the opportunity of doing work in a
practice school in conjunction with
the six weeks session of the summer
school here this summer, according
to an announcement made recently
by President J. S. Landers of the
State Normal school at Monmouth.
The session will begin June 19 and
will be concluded the latter part of
July.
One of the requirements which
graduates of normal schools must
meet in order to get a diploma is
a certain amount ef directed teach
ing in a practice school under the
criticism of skilled instructors. Here
tofore, the Pendleton school has not
offered this feature, and the oppor
tunity of this extra training in the
normal school in their own section of
the state is expected to add to the
popularity of the course.
W. F. Barnett, merchant and far
mer of Lexington, was in Heppner
a short time on Tuesday. Mr. Bar
nett is of the opinion that all crops
in his section are coming along
very well and that there will be no
necessity for re-seeding. The late
ness of the spring, however, is going
to crowd the fanners to get their
work done in proper season.
