Salem maintains her place as the
secomlt city in Oregon, as the 1920
census reports shows that the state
capitol hits a population of 17,67!), or
an increase of 25.4 per cent in a de
lude. Astoria, the thriving seaport
town at the mouth of the Columbia
river, shows a gain of 46.1 per cent
over the 1910 census, with a popula
tion of 14,027.
There are now only 1130 Indians
on the Umatilla reservation near Pen
dleton, according to a report recently
issued by Major E. L. 9wartzlander,
superintendent. This shows a decline
of 70 in the last 11 years. The popu-

Farm House Destroyed
The farm residence on the H. A.
Edmonds ranch three miles south
east of Morgan, farmed by W. A.
Bunnell, Mr. Kdmond's son-in-law
and knofwn as the Velght place, was
totally destroyed by fire, together
with Its contents last Friday, sup
posedly caused from a defective flue.
The blaze was first discovered by
Mrs. Bunnell in a bedroom In which
infant child was asleep and she
hud barely time to snatch the baby
from the burning bed and muke her
escape before the whole building wa
in flames. The child (was painfully
but not dangerously burned about the
face and body. There was no insur
ance on either the house or contents
ami the loss is about $1200. lone

woman the ballot, won for him.
If the Legislature adopts BUtfratfe,
the women voters of America will
vote at the presidential election in
November.
