Great Development Will
Result From John Day
District Says Pioneer
"I have heard considerable of the,
great John Day Irrigation Project,"
said Henry Blackman, Morrow coun-
ty pionwr, who is here on nis annual
visit, accompanied by Mrs. Black
man; in speaking with a Gazette
Times representative this wees.
"NA'hen this vast body of land is un
der irrigation, foodstuffs twill be rais
ed sufficient to support the entire
state of Oregon. I may not live to
see it. but the younger generation
will, when Morrow county will rank
with Multnomah in point of wealth."
Mr. Blackman finds a great many
improvements in Heppner since his
last visit here, with the completion of
the Elks', Gilliam & Bisbee and hotel
buildings on Main street. "These
more than repay for the loss by fire
in 1918," said Mr. Blackman, "and
like all interior towns, is benefitted
in the long run."
When Mr. Blackman made his
home here for a good many years, he
was prominently identified in politics
and was the recipient of many hon
ors. He served as collector of cus
toms in Portland and was a leader in
the democratic politics of the state.
However, since making his home in
California, Mr. Blackman has with
drawn from the ativities of political
life to a considerable degree and
when we asked him for his opinion of
the political situation, he said he was
entirely out of politics andh ad noth
ing to say.
The three sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Blackman are all doing well. Hepp
ner, the cartoonist, is following his
profession in New York; Leo has re
tuned as a mining engineer with the
American Smelting and Refining Co.
to Chill and is located at Arica; and
Abe is in the mercantile business in
Los Angeles and expects to go short
ly to Seattle to take charge of a store.
After spending two weeks here as
guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Phill Cohn, Mr. and Mrs. Blackman
will go to Portland for six weeks be
fore returning to their San Fancisco
home.

the days of long ago. Prizes will be

and the best dressed cow girl, aa well
as for the homliest and toughest cow
boy of the lot. The cowboys will go
