The Southern Sierras Power coin
'pany of Riverside, California has for
sometime past been transmitting a
high tension electric current for a
idislanre of 517 miles and doing It
j successfully.
ma one runs iroiu me company g
plant in California to Yuma, Ariiona.
The current Is ordinarily brought 239
miles from Yuma to San Bernardino
at 87,000 volts and stepped down to
r.G.ooi) volts and sent on the remain
der of the distance. The flexibility of
the system, hdwever, is such that
when a transformer recently burnt
out in Sun Bernardino the current
was sent the full 517 miles at 55,000
volts during the time for repairs.
This simply shows the unlimited pow
er resources that can be developed
here in the west.
The Montana Power company has
demonstrated that the heaviest
freight and passenger trains on the
Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul can
be handled successfully with electri
