Oregon Agricultural College, Mar.
17. That newspaper advertising for
the sale of farm commodities is com
ing into use rapidly because it is one
remedy for the wasteful and unsatis
factory methods of the distributing
-system, is the opinion of C. J. Mcin
tosh, agricultural press editor of the
college.
"The most economical use of farm
products Is by the grohver and when
he has a surplus the most economi
cal users are his neighbors," said Mr.
Mcintosh. "The most economical way
of marketing to his neighbors is to
market as nearly direct as possible.
"Sometimes growers supply their
neighbors with Uieir own surplus pro
ducts through long, devious, and ex
pensive channels. The potato grow
ers of Coos Bay have often sold their
potatoes to heir neighbors through
San Francisco commission houses.
There are legitimate charges for
freight, storage and commissions
which are borne by both producer and
consumer. The producer gets less
than the terminal price by the the
cost of haul and storage, while the
consumer pays the terminal price plus
storage and reltaul. The newspaper
is an ideal vehicle for cutting across
lots from grdwer to table."
Mr. Mcintosh condemns the use of
the term "For Sale" in farm adver
tisements ami believes that the item
of sale should b printed in bold face
type in the first line. Leading desir
able qualities of the product should
be given.
"Advertisements to be successful
must be based on reputable goods."
says Mr. Mcintosh. "They must be
clearly and simply written and they
should be well displayed. The quan
tity, quality, and place where inquiry
should he sent and the prices should
be given. Some additional informa
tion designed to create a desire for
the product is likely to be worth a
irrent deal more than it costs to pub
lish it."
Farmers and newspaper men in
trenora! in Oregon have taken nn in
terest in the movement toward this
type of advertising. It is expected
that a college bulletin will be publish
ed soon on the subject of advertising
for the farmer.
