Iowa Dairyman Cuts Down en ,retd

Prepared by the United States Depart

A gixxi example of what cow-testing
associations are doing to help dairy
men cull unprofitable milk producer
is shown in the experince of an lm:i
dairyman who reportn that through
the cow-testing association he learned
that one cow was paying him ?--K
for each dollar's wont of feed, whib
another returned only 58 cents. This
dairyman lost no time In selling the
poor cow and five otheis which showed
tests were made immediately after
milking. Xsturally on standing the
milk Hh the greatest number of bac
teria would deteriorate most rapidly
due to the multiplication of the germs.
Accordingly its value as a human food
product would be greatly reduced,
while Its Introduction on the city mar
ket would be carefully scrutiniied,
and in some cases punished by the
health authorities.
Pride should cause every dairyman
to maiutain his cows in au attractive,

day In the year. In a way the appear

that neglected fences, overrun fence

Flu Conditions Improving

Pr. Harold C. Bean, city health offl

ber of flu cases reported in town. He
estimates that there are abotU one
hundred cases within the city at the
present time, but believes the crest
of the epidemic wave has been reach

Glass-Decorating OK Art.
The art of glass decorating Is not
a modern Bohemian accomplishment.
It thrived In the seventeenth century.
The Roman cathedral of Prague. In

soon became a favorite form of church
ornamentation. The churches of the
Czechs possessed many high and wide
windows which were brightly and ar
tlstlcally decorated. Asnaes Sylvius,
who later became Pope Pius H, ob

Pearl's Transformation.
For two or three years In the seas
of Japan, the Antilles or the Indies,
at a depth of not more than ten or
twelve meters, the marvel known ns
a pearl has Its birth, tako form and
grows In Its sheltered Infancy. Then
there comes a day when suddenly, bru
tally, something tragic and wonderful
happens. After the great excitement
of a rude unrooting, the pearl nwnkens
to daylight like the princess of the
fairy tales. Passionate, mad eyes giue
upon her. Perhaps, already, the divers
are killing each other over her. Hut
a muster comes and assures her pro
tection, places her among companions,
and with them surrounds her with a
thousand intentions by dint of which
she loses that look of extreme youth
and greenness which tins lingered from
the solourn in the ocean.

"Auction of Souls," which is to be
presented at the Star theater, has
the unusual distinction of having a
leading woman who actually enacted
the original scenes which the mo
tion picture reproduces. Miss Auro
ra Mardiganian, the girl who has tnt
leading role, is not a motion picture
actress, but was induced to act for
the films just what she personally
passed through in Armenia in 1915.
-Miss Maruiganian s inexperience
before the camera is not apparent in
the picture for siie holds up her own
end as well as any of the regular ac
tors. Perhaps her art is that born of
the vivid memory of the horrible
scenes through which she passed be
fore escaping from her native lana i.
come to America for further relief.
She is the daughter of a former
prosperous banker at Harpout, and
was thirteen years old when the war
broke out. Being a beautiful girl she
attracted a Turkish official who wish-'
ed to make her his wife, imposing up
on her his own religion and the low
ly state of Turkish women.
Her father refused to give her up.
When the massaces of tiie Armen
ians started, carried on by tiie Turks
under a secret agreement with the
Germans, the Mohammedans made
further efforts to get possession of
the girl. After seeing her father,!
mother and two brothers and three
sisters brutally slain, she entered up
on a series of adventures which prove
that life may be more exciting than
the w ildest dream of the fictionist.
She goes through an untold succes
sion of horrible sceueB, escapes from
the Turks, is captured by the wild
Kurds of the desert, sold as a slave,
put in a harem, takes refuge with
monks, and at last is saved by the
British who sent her to America
where she has talked and written of
and finally acted out her experiences.
In "Auction of Souls," which is the
story o her harrowing years in Ar
menia, every detail of the story fol
lows the actual experiences of Miss
Mardiganian, and the report to the
United States, of Viscount James
Bryce, former English ambassador to
the United States, who directed the
investigation of the Armenian atroci
ties.
