Oil and Gas Investigation In
Western Oregon Nearly
Completed-
A geologic examination of West
ern Oregon to determine the possible
occurence of commercial oil and gas
has been one of the major activities
of the Oregon Bureau of Mines and
Geology during the past six months.
This investigation has been conduct
ed in exactly the same manner as
the big producing oil companies carry
on such work. The firm of Harrison
and Eaton of Denver and Fort Worth,
oil geologists, are conducting the in
vestigation. The field work, there
fore, has been handled by petroleum
geologists who have had experience
in the oil regions of California, Wyo
ming, Texas, and other producing
districts of this and other countries.
In order to determine the charac
ter and structure of the various
rocks that underlie Western Oregon
and upon which the occurrence and
preservation of oil and gas depend,
a series of east and west cross sect
ions of the Great Range and interior
valleys were studied and carefully
measured. To do this, advantage
was taken of the numerous deeply
cut river canyons, for example, the
Siuslaw, Yaqulna, Umpqua, and the
lower Columbia and upper William
ette rivers, where thousands of feet
of thickness of the rocks may be
seen in many places.
The Bureau made a special effort
to get all possible information as to
"oil indications" or "oil seeps"
throughout the state. Reported lo
calities were examined and, where
necessary, tests made to prove or
disprove the presence of oil.

The work included a careful study
of the composition of the rock layers
and sampling and nesting of all of
the more promising looking forma
tions. In general, beds of shale that
contain remains of animal or veget
able life are favorable to oil forma
tion, and some shales were observed
in which oil is actually being formed.
A region can become a commer
cial producer ot oil, however, only
where the rock structure Is such that
the oil formed can accumulate in
quantity in porous beds beneath the
crests of folds or domes where It
becomes entrapped by water pressure.
The results of this survey are be
ing prepared for publication at the
earliest possible date.
A study ot the oil situation In

tion with the United States Geolog
ical Survey. Dr. J. P. Buwalda of
Yale University, who had charge of
the field work, is preparing a report
for early publication.
