APPRECIATE KINDLY
NEIGHBORLINESS
Echo, Ore.. Nov! IS, 1919.
To the Editor of The Gazette-Times,
Heppner, Ore.
Dear Sir:
We would be pleased to have you
publish the following in your paper.
On last Friday evening, Nov. 14,
after enjoying a well prepared sup
per at the home of C. H. Bartholo
mew, we hastened to the church at
Pine City, to attend a song service
and social gathering. A large
crowd was present, neighbors and
church members. We very much
enjoyed the social side of the occa
sion. The neighborly feeling made
us glad and we appreciate it, as well
as the gifts, which amounted to about
$35. These occasions are bright
spots in our lives.

American Manufacturers
Desire the Metric System
San Francisco, Nov. 24. It is the
opinion of the manufacturers of the
state of Washington that metric units
of measurement should be used in
the United States. A referendum
rote just conducted by the Manufac
turers' Association of Seattle showed
2 to 1 majority in favor of meter-liter-gram,
the metric standards.
Following is a copy of the resolu
tion sent by them to President Wil-;
son: "In order that you may have!
knowledge of the interest taken by j
the manufacturers of Washington ;
and sentiment with reference to
changes which should be made in our
system of weights and measures, we
advise you that the result of a refer
endum taken among the manufactur
ers of this state shows that they are
2 to 1 in favor of the adoption of the
meter-liter-gram or metric system."
"We believe that this system will
eventually become the standard the
world over and hope that you will
use your good offices to establish it
at the earliest possible time in the
United States. Manufacturers' As
sociation of Washington."
This resolution is typical of those
which are being received daily at
Washington, D. C. from engineers,
manufacturers, and men of every pro
fession all over thel'nited States.

WiU Aid in Building Homes.
C. A. Lansdowne and Wm. E.
Hanscom, of the Northwestern Horn
Builders Association, were in Echo
Wednesday and met with the Com
mercial Club. They presented a pro
position by which any citizen of the
city who wishes to build a home will
be given ample financial assistance
for that purpose. They agree to ad
vance a large proportion of the cost
of a house, and allow the loan to be
repaid in monthly payments like
rent.
Their proposal was approved by
the Club, and that organization will
do all in their power to assist anyone
desiring to build. Prospective home
builder3 are invited to take up the
matter with any member of the Com
mercial Club, and they will be given
all possible assistance. Echo News.
Encourage Increased
Salmon Production
The salmon pack this year has
been somewhat lighter than usual.
It is alleged that the streams of the
Pacific Coast and Alaska are being
over-fished. The Federal govern
ment is studying the situation to de
termine, if possible, the reasons for
this year's lessened pack. The gov
ernment is considering the propoga
tion of a largely increased number of
salmon fry as an insurance against
the depletion of the commercial sup
ply in the future. It is understood
that the number of hatcheries will be
increased and tha more efficient
methods will be introduced.
Pacifiic coast states should exert
themselves to increase salmon pro
pogation in every stream flowing in
to the Pacific. The small amount ex
pended on fish hatcheries is returned
an hundred fold in the way of in
creased development of the salmot
packing industry, employment of
labor and taxes paid.
Soldier Want Beekeeping.
Disabled soldiers in large numbers
are asking for a course in beekeeping
that will enable them to take It up as
a vocation. In response the depart
ment of enthology at the O. A. C. ex
periment Btation will give an Inten
sive course of two hours each fore
noon and afternoon of Farmers week
December 29-Jaunary 3. Many
fruit men also ask for the course to
assist them in putting apiaries in
their orchards for pollination. Hon
ey producers want to Join the clais
to increase honey production in these
days of scarce sugar and high sugar
substitute prices. "Enough practice
will be given the students to enable
them to overcome the Initial hesitancy
In handling bees," says Prof. A. L.
Loved, who will have charge of the
course.
