Astoria. St-pt. 8. Thousands of
persons from Astoria and the Lower
Columbia district visited the Port of
ABtorla docks Sunday and Inspected
the battleship Vermont, which is
moored there. Every courtesy was
shown the public by the officers and
men, who. In turn have been royally
entertained while guesti of ABtorla.
Special services were held In all the
churches In honor of the fleet, and
were well attended by the gobs.
Officers and men were Invited to
dinner by the hospitable residents of
the city, and later hundreds of the
visitors were taken for auto rides to
the beaches and other places of at
traction. At Seaside the baseball
team from the Vermont met the As
toria Marine Works in a spirited con-
test.
The super-dreadnaught Arkansas,
with Secretary Daniels aboard, will
arrive about noon and anchor op
posite the port docks. A committee
composed of local port officials, the
mayor, the president of the Chamber
of Commerce, Mayor Baker of Port
land, Governor Olcott and other
prominent citizens of Oregon, will
welcome the cabinet officer. It Is
expected that the secretary will then
go aboard the steamer James For
nanc for the Inspection of the pro
posed naval base site at Tongue
Point. In the evening the secretary
will be the guest of honor at a spec
ial banquet at the Welnhard hotel,
after which he will address the peo
ple at the Astoria theater. He will
then leave on a special train for Portland,

LONG INSPECTION TOUR

west, according to E. F. Averill of
the U. S. Biological Survey, who re
turned Saturday night from a seven
weeks' field inspection trip. Nearly
4000 miles of bis territory was cov
ered by auto and be says that the
testimony of stockmen and hunterB
wherever he went was to the effect
that the livestock destroying pests
are being slowly but surely eliminat
ed. Mr. Averill was accompanied by
his wife and two children, all of
whom enjoyed the trip, especially
the tour of Yelowstone Park, which
was made during Mr. AveriU's vaca
tion period. Mr. Averill reports that
the rains will greatly improve the
roa from hero to Spokane. He says
that everywhere there was evidence
of the enormous amount of road
work which is being done In Oregon.
